It's actually been posted here before... somewhere. But that's not important.

I did a few searches but couldn't find anything. I just felt it was to important to post for slot car history and good reading.

I have a copy of that magazine too. I was looking for one in a way and stumbled on it at a garage sale for a whole 50 cents. Sure was cheaper than Ebay.

Great article, and in Car and Driver, too!

Just to update you, Mike Steube quit slots two or three years ago and Tore Anderson has cut way back on his racing due to health problems.
Cukras, Schmid, and Warmack are still at it.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

Cukras is still cool! I race with him once in a while at BPR, one of the greatest guys to run with, have lunch with or just shoot the breeze with. Class act all the way.
In slot car racing, he is a legend.

Thanks, Ken, it was fun to reread the article.
I was there and was a victim of the bumpy Elmsford straight like so many others that day.

I always thought that the late Mr. Mandel was too smug and condescending in this article. Probably because Cukras was making more money than he was!

True. I remember a lot of us thinking he really made slot car racers sound like a dirty, smelly bunch. Of course the depiction of Von Ahrens was pretty much spot on...

Dear Bill,
Mike Steube just donated to the Hardbody Enduro for GTP cars, and has been around Buena Park recently again. He is more into archery these days, but still cares a lot about slot cars, enough to donate several race prizes. Tore is fully involved in the RetroPro class, as he loves motor building.
Cukras and Bryan and Terry all head up the SCRRA.
We are trying to get Mike to join us in the 1/32 class as well.

Yup, I remember being there with all of them. And yes, even PVA's green teeth. LMAO.

Mandel was pretty much a jerk when he came to Nutley. You knew he was going to do a hatchet job on slot cars.

What happened to Wayne Williams? I think I know about the rest of the guys.

Wayne moved to Colorado and made a fortune inventing parts for racing bicycles. If I remember correctly it was something to do with brakes.

I liked the article because it called me "the ice man," the coolest pro of all. With my contract racing for Cobra Slot car products, I was making more money than anyone ever has for racing slot cars.
Wayne started "Avid" offroad bicycle brakes. He recently sold his patent for belts replacing chains to Gates Corp and now owns a bicycle manufacturing company called "Spot Bicycles." They have belt drive and cost thousands.

It looks like a lot of the "big time" racers of this era have done quite well for themselves in various endeavors.
