The 2016 SCRRA Summer Western Classic is just around the corner!!.....once again a Major race using the same schedule and format as the recent Parma Checkpoint Cup with 5 Retro races over a 3 day weekend, Friday July 22 through Sunday July 24.

On Friday, July 22, the first race of the day will be Anglewinder Coupes on the Flat track with tech starting at about 9:30 AM. The next race will be F1 also on the Flat track with tech beginning about an hour after the completion of the Coupe race. The final Friday race will be Retro Pro on the King track with tech at about 6 PM. BPR will open their doors at about 8 AM on Friday.

Saturday, the 23rd will feature the premier event of the weekend, Can Am on the King track with tech at 9:30 AM and BPR opening at 7:30 AM.  Sunday, the 24th will bring the final race of the weekend and it will be F1 also on the King track with tech beginning a little later at 10 AM with BPR opening at 8 AM. All the usual SCRRA Retro rules will be strictly enforced.

The only minor racing change will be in regards to qualifying and move ups from the B Main and this will only effect the Can Am and F1 races on the King track.  The top 5 (FIVE) qualifiers will automatically make the A Main with 3 (THREE) move ups this time from the B Main.  So, simply, all 3 podium racers from the B advance to the Final A Main. 2 (TWO) racers as usual will advance from the C to the B Main.

The Flat track races will be as normal and will advance 2 from the B to the A and the number of move ups in the lower races will be determined by the number of entrants.

The exact Retro Pro racing format will be determined shortly as several suggestions have been made to allow a few changes which all seem reasonable.........more information on this ASAP.

Also, at this race it will NOT be necessary to bring the cars to the tech table with the bodies off. The SCRRA will continue to check for the light bodies and will do a thorough visual motor inspection but everything can be accomplished without the extra added agro of body removal. If we see something that requires a further look then we may remove the body for closer inspection.

And, lastly, several people have recently asked about the Nascar Enduro we had last year in October at the Boola Bash and if we have plans to run it this year and the answer is an unequivocal.....YES!!   We had 10 teams and over 40 racers last year so start making plans for this years event!....... more details to follow shortly! :good:

The A main "5/3" change makes a lot of sense. The previous "4/4" method basically left no turn marshals for the lowest main.

I will be joining you all Friday evening to do RetroPro tech.

Not certain if I'll stay much after that but you'll have your regular tech inspector for the SWC.

Retro Pro should be a barn burner.  Joe Chevy will be there--James Grimstead, and the usual cast of characters except we will be missing the Cervantes -they are off family camping. I hope you're able to race Craig--looking forward to it.

No steel center section cars in RetroPro please.  They exceed the scope of the rules and are not allowed.

I'm not racing Tim, but will be there for tech.

Just a few days to go now until we kick off the premier summer Retro race at Buena Park Raceway, the 2016 SCRRA Summer Western Classic. As mentioned earlier a couple subtle changes for this race and one will be that it will no longer be necessary to bring the Can Am cars to the tech table with the body off.  We've made a special pair of dial calipers to conveniently check for the few super light weight bodies that may be still floating around and we'll still be looking at the motors closely.

DSC06225.JPG

Also, a special thanks to Dennis Samson and his son Stuart for organizing all the pictures and the artwork for all the award plaques in all the classes! Looks great guys and the pictures are again from Dennis' home track and are always colorful and perfect for the awards! Thanks Dennis and Stu!

DSC06226.JPG

Lastly, we thank Marc Franco for organizing a very informal catered lunch for all the Can Am racers on Saturday. A small catering service will set up outside around noon and provide Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches and tacos for the racers.................and the lunch is FREE!!!   Cold drinks are always available at BPR . Thanks Marc!!

Action starts this Friday with Coupes and F1 on the Flat track and Retro Pro on Friday evening. Can Am on Saturday and F1 on Sunday.  See you there!!  :good:

Sorry you couldn't make it Mark!  A couple of great Flat track races today to kick off the 2016 SWC. In Anglewinder Retro Coupes Bryan Warmack JUST held off a hard charging Tim Neja for the win with Charlie Nelson a close 3rd.  Remember Charlie?..... He was the winner of the very first Western States race in 1968 and a member of the original Team Checkpoint!

In F1 a SUPER drive by Bill Vanderziel had him on top in another close race over Bryan Warmack 2nd and Mill Conroy 3rd. The 3 were separated by about a lap!

Retro Pro is probably in progress right now and I'm sure someone will post the results shortly.............Can Am on the King track tomorrow.

Would like to give a big thanks to Mill for some work on my F-1. I ran in F-1 today, but lost my brakes as soon as the race started with a RH. Afterwards, while Mill was setting up his Can-Am for tomorrow, he switched motors for me in my F-1. With a new TSR, I have brakes again! And faster than the RH. Thanks Mill. That was mighty nice to take the time to work on my car while setting up yours. Very much appreciated. Now, back to our regular scheduled programming.

In the Can Am action today on the King track, Mill Conroy was TQ at 3.86.  The A Main saw the usual super close racing with Bryan Warmack coming out on top with a close victory over 2nd Place Mark MacVittie and 3rd Place Sam Rackham. Great Race!!

Retro Pro results last night had Rick Linn 1st, Alex Freund 2nd and Tore Anderson 3rd.   The final race of the weekend, Formula 1 will be up tomorrow........

Congrats Bryan on CanAm and big thanks to Marc Franco for setting up the lunch!

Yes on this! Bryan ran a very clean race, starting on red. Just stayed out of trouble the whole time. Mark really ran a "stay out of the way" type of race like Bryan. This was one FAST Can-Am main. These guys were rockets from the get go. Gadzooks, if these racers keep this up, the next Checkpoint is gonna be insane. If you could have seen Mill's car in qualifying, 3.86! Man!

We have some MIGHTY fast guys here at BPR. One more thing: Thanks to Mark Franco for the SUPERB lunch! More later.

All in all such a fun time hanging out w/ old friends, and making some new ones. Hard to explain the feeling of racing next to guys I raced with 50 years ago! Special thanks to Bryan for the Coupe loaner (even though I almost got away w/ your race car in qualifying!  :laugh2: ). Also, to Mill for spending a LOT of time getting my CanAm car set up. Rick Linn for helping during the race. You know, there's a lot of folks around more than willing to lend a helping hand with a hint here and a tool there. Much appreciated.

Congrats to all the podium guys. Well deserved, indeed!

I helped turn marshal the Can Am A main. It was all I could do to watch my corner. I have never seen a race start out so close. After about the first 15 laps, all 8 cars were only a few feet apart. Fun to watch!
