I remember seeing a schematic to control a choke with 4 relays to get 16 steps. If memory serves it used some kind of digital switch to do this.

I'm trying to help a friend from Argentina to build one of this and I've searched everywhere with no luck so far. I've found a thread in other forum but is old and has no much information. The links to the schematic are no longer working.

I'm hoping somebody has a schematic or a link to one here in Slotblog. I'll really appreciate any help.

Dont have a schematic but can tell you how they work. You need to start of with a 16 position Binary Coded Switch (BCD). These switches have 5 contacts on them, 1 common and 4 BCD outlets. Each BCD outlet fires to one of the 4 relays. Because the BCD switch has a low current rating you need to amplify the output of the BCD switch. I did this with 4 mini relays, other people have done it with a transistor circuit. Each of the large relays has a loop of choke wire between the relay contacts (Relay 1 - 8ft, 2 - 4ft, 3 - 2ft, 4 - 1ft) the relays are then placed in series with each other. This means that if no relays are on there will be 15ft of choke wire is in place. If Relay 1 is turned on then by the closing of the contacts 8ft is taken out of the choke loop. The BCD switch will turn combinations of relays on and off as it sequels through the 16 positions, giving choke settings from 0 to 15ft. A common feature is to wire in an LED for each relay to give a read of the choke setting.

The only other thing to consider is a diode across the coli of the relays to kill any voltages induced as the relay turns off.

Thanks a lot. Got it. I see now how it works. What a great idea!

Just combining the 4 sections of the choke to get 1 to 16 meters in 1 meter increment.

Though Feet not metres - metres would be an awful lot of wire.
