To honor the memory of R. H. "Mac" McMasters, the original owner of Tom Thumb Hobbies, an annual "Mac" Award has been created to recognize person(s) who have contributed to the growth of the IRRA and/or Retro racing. This award will be presented each year at the annual R4 race at Tom Thumb Hobbies.

The IRRA is pleased and proud to recognize Dennis Samson as the 2008 (and first) recipent of the annual "Mac" Award for his many contributions to our growing segment of the 1/24 slot racing hobby.

Dennis is one of the key figures in the promotion of retro racing and in the creation and operation of the IRRA. Without Dennis's enthusiasm, assistance, and sage advice, it is unlikely that the IRRA would exist today. He is active in the IRRA management as a board member, and is well-known as one of the hobby's premier builders of great-handling retro chassis. He is also a top-tier retro racer, and a contender in concours at every event he enters.

Dennis holds the 2008 Mac plaque he gets to keep and Mike McMasters displays the perpertual Mac Award plaque, which will be inscribed with each winner's name and hang in a place of honor at Tom Thumb. In the background is Steve Deiters, who presented this award to Dennis on the IRRA's behalf.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

It was a great and unexpected honor to receive this award, and I would like to thank those in the IRRA who deemed me worthy of it.

But as I said at the event, I am just a messenger of a vision that belongs to Mike Steube and Paul Sterrett, and we owe our thanks to them for everything that has happened in this wild ride called Retro Racing.

Despite some small differences, there is a common thread throughout all of retro racing that has pulled us all in and given us some of the best times of our young and old lives - fun racing with good friends.

Time and time again, at every race I have attended, the same theme is repeated - this thing is so much fun because of the people that are involved, and I think Mike and Paul can be very proud of what they started and I am happy to be helping expand that across the country and across the world.

A good friend of mine in Denver has a saying: "It is never too late to have a happy childhood", and thanks to Mike and Paul, and many others now operating retro racing programs across the various regions, we are all experiencing this first-hand!

Congratulations, Dennis! A well-deserved honor to a true gentleman of our hobby! You have taken the retro flag with you across the country and are always promoting in the best interests of all concerned.

So much DRAMA for such small cars....
