Can-Am on the Sovereign – 9/27/16
Nine CanAm Cars in Tech:
For the second month in a row MVH retro-racers took to the American “Purple Mile” with their Can-Am cars. It was a night of close racing as nine racers ran in the familiar four/four format.
Ernie LaChance turned the fastest race-lap of the evening with a 7.686 while Ray Lee was a full tenth of a second slower, but there were four other racers in hot pursuit and separated by just 6/100ths of a second. At the halfway point Ernie was in second, trailing Dave Panich by a lap while sitting a lap ahead of Peter Lentros and Ray. There were also several close races in rest of the field as the final lap tally indicates.
At the start of the final heat, Dave was up on Ernie by a lap and a half but driving a slower car. Halfway through the heat Ernie had closed the gap to less than a lap but time ran out before he could make the pass. Dave took the win by just 7 sections. Ray claimed the bottom step on the podium, a lap back to Ernie and a lap ahead of Peter. Several laps back Dan Savage was the “best of the rest”, taking 5th place, while Richard Girvin beat Tom Smith to the 6th spot by just 6 sections. Dick Griffin and Richard Payne had their own battle going on for the final spot and finished on the same lap as Dick prevailed by just 10 sections.
