Formula 1 on the King – 11/22

 

 

10 racers presented their F-1 cars for technical inspection prior to the start of this week’s retro-race on the MVH King.  Racing was on the middle 6 lanes.

 

The race for the podium was hotly contested as four drivers posted times between 4.56 and 4.66 seconds, though Justin Ewell logged the best lap of the race at 4.500 seconds. A little further back, three more drivers logged fast-lap times of either 4.82 or 4.83 seconds. While it is true that speed will get you to the front of the field, it is driving that keeps you there. In several heats, racers competed side-by-side for the entire 3 minutes...or until one racer made a mistake. The best of these duels was between Peter Lentros and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood who were within a few feet of each other for an entire heat.    

 

At the checkered flag the top four cars were each separated by just one lap. Peter managed to out drive everyone else to take the win over a slightly quicker Justin. Woody claimed 3^rd  while Ray Lee had to settle for a rare non-podium spot. Ernie Lachance, 3 laps off the pace and the “last of the fast”, slotted into 5^th. Several laps behind and posting identical fast-lap times, Rich Girvin and Dave Panich were in a side-by-side battle of their own for the 6^th finishing position with Dave eventually prevailing by 2 laps. HO racer Don Hall borrowed a car from Peter and was wheel-to-wheel with Richard Payne for much of the race, though Don was able to slip into 8^th place by one lap. Dick Griffin finished out the field.
