Or can they be stream of consciousness ramblings that the readers have to guess what the OP is getting at?

Case in point HERE.

This thread turned confrontational because the OP, despite making a long first post, never stated what his intentions were in said first post, and finally did 2-1/2 days later, with another vague post in between.

Of course this one does.

And you're the last one to make a wise ass comment.

You needed a phone conversation to understand what he was getting at. :dash2: :dash2: :dash2:

Go back to that thread and check out the numerous other Slotblog racers that were thoroughly confused.

If Steve would have just said he intended to build some runners using a plan he liked for himself, he would saved a bunch of useless discussion making references to rules, posting links to rules, etc.

Mike, it's a frame of mind.

My 2 cents is, threads with a point certainly get more "mileage" so to speak, but it's hardly something that can be mandated.
If a guy starts a thread that has no specific point in his own "sandbox" I think it's fine.

What irks me much more, is guys posting in response to the post immediately before with zero comprehension of the thread subject.
And zero respect for good information others have already posted.

Back to my vintage cave now. :shok:

Honestly Mike, Steve's thread "did" have a point.

The point was to define a build-ethic around the old cars, but without the frustrations and expense involved with some of the long gone parts. Obviously, guys like Steve and Rick T have spent a lot of time documenting the history of the sport, and have the skills to recreate some of the most iconic designs... sometimes doing them better than the originals, and taking the time to document that stuff right here. Along with all that, there comes the realization that just keeping to a strictly period-correct ethic will make emulating what they do out of reach for a lot of the other talented builders here.

So, I saw Steve's "point" as also being an attempt to encourage others to get busy and build "within" the loosely-defined, but realistic limits he described. Right away, people were assuming this was some "new racing class," or that this was some sort of swipe at "Retro."

I think Steve could have answered some questions sooner, and that might have headed-off the negative assumptions, but it's a little discouraging to see something as positive as trying to encourage others to join-in on some "almost-vintage" fun be swatted-down. I just figured he was being a little "coy" as a way to get people interested... you know... just enough information to start the conversation, but not enough to nail it down.

Personally, I'm stoked about Steve's "point" :) because I've long been sort of... er... "vintage style" myself, especially since Rick T long-ago acquired all the NOS good stuff there was to be had. :D  I'm hoping to participate in my own small way.   :)

It was and is a fine idea.

But like you said, he could have answered some questions sooner. IMO, way sooner.

I didn't and don't see the point in being "coy."

If he did, there wouldn't have been the confusion he was trying to start a racing class and there would of been zero negative posts.

PS-  Steve's  comment "Just accomplished hobbyists enjoying the part of the hobby that they happen to like best."

That word "accomplished", out of lack of a better term, comes off "snooty".

Mike,

I had no idea you were a fan of my work. Thank you!

May I offer you a copy of a new drawing before anyone else?

Okeefe VS 6810 Bat Pan Dwg.jpg

Patterned after Bob Emott's Batwinders from late 1968. These chassis were true architectural gems. Bob was the Frank Lloyd Wright of chassis builders.

This chassis is sized to fit modern bodies and modern (.800" wide) rear wheels. The plumber hinge is located under the front axle.

You're welcome.

There is no doubt chassis drawings in vintage magazines helped a lot of builders, and definitely helped me. So I figured with my computer and a simple drawing program in Microsoft Excel, I could help, too. As an unexpected bonus, most of them make attractive printouts.

Now I continue trying to help others like myself, some of whom are not racers but still enjoy building and running our historically accurate creations. As a bonus, most of them make attractive slot cars.

We each contribute to this hobby/sport in our own way.

I am going to re-start my "vintage-style Idea" topic, incorporating some of your suggestions. I cannot guarantee it will be any less verbose (that is my style) but if stating the point up front helps clarify the rest of the idea for readers who are not already fans of vintage slot cars, I have no problem doing that.

Considering the skill level required to build such chassis (then and now), slot racing would have never survived much past the "Golden era" if smoother tracks, allowing much simpler chassis, hadn't come along.

Nevertheless, its great to see such craftsmanship be recreated.

Cheers
