Since Bob's R/C cleaner disappeared with the dingos, I have been using CRC QD contact cleaner. They sell it in small or big cans and it works great. Does not seem to harm the comms and just cleans out the gunk.

Do not use the regular contact cleaner as it takes forever to dry and seems to have oil in it.

Home Depot, CRC QD Contact Cleaner, $6.95 a can, works great and easy to find.

Tetrachloroethylene...CRC Lectra-Motive cleaner.

It helps to take a second look at the can. Not actually TCE, as I had originally thought.

Still, it's carcinogenic and a danger to water supplies. Will use with care.

Thanks for all the input. And I might still simply buy another can of Pure anyway.

Some electronic contact cleaners contain a lubricant. Make sure the one you choose does not.

Here is what i use. Very affordable, no residue , fast drying with no chlorinated solvents.

  • Quick drying, plastic safe formula leaves no residue
  • Ideal for applications where lower flashpoing materials can be tolerate

i just pulled the MSDS for both CRC electromotive cleaner and QD Electronic cleaner.

CRC Electromotive uses  Tetrachloroethylene (used for dry cleaning), which is a carcinogen that  increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease and colorblindness.

CRC QD cleaner has Naphtha,  Difuoroethane, n-Hexane, 2,2-Dimethylbutane (), and 2-Methylpentane.

Id take my chances with the QD

Well, guess using the regular contact cleaner explains my propensity to Marshall with shades on. The regular CRC stuff does leave an oily film. Still conductive but greasy.

The lectra-motive cleaner. The electric motor and parts cleaner, not the qd contact cleaner. The qd stuff is made for switches while the other stuff is supposed to be for motors. Our stuff uses the contact cleaner to clean our motors.

Well JJ, I know a buddy of ours who used brake cleen to clean a motor. Really trashed it. Besides, I use the same cleaner for all my stuff, gr12 on down. I know it is excessive, but simple. Besides, the lectra-motive cleaner does not do as great a job as the qd stuff.

I use the plastic safe crc contact cleaner in all of my brushed motors and brushless for rc planes. Doesn't leave residue and works great!

Another vote for CRC QD here.

I've used if for years with good results and no negative issues.

You must have some weak brake kleen.  The stuff trashed the seals, pulled epoxy off the arm and even took some of the epoxy off the winds.  Brakekleen is very strong stuff and will remove hardened paint if used.  Remember, this stuff is used to remove brake dust without a brush, so it is really aggressive.  It has been awhile, but I also want to say it loosened the comm.

Some time ago the brake cleaners were aggressive chlorinated hydrocarbons (carcinogenic but not flammable) - now they contain acetone and toluene, still pretty potent solvents (flammable)  to attack paint for instance.

honest-to-goodness BraKlean is some pretty serious stuff. but it's my still my go-to when I Really want to dissolve something hydrocarbonic. just like Pure.

nowadays you have to look pretty hard to find it because of the environment and all, but I don't believe that the amount that we use has a very large impact.

plus, if you sprayed That much of it around,

a.] you'd run out pretty fast, and

b.] a lot of plastic things that you cared about might be melted. (nylon, bakelite and engineering plastics excepted.)

I put a rag in my wastebasket when I spray a motor or something to try to recover some of it and have a couple small things lined up waiting to be wiped down- no sense wasting any before it evaporates!
