Very cool.

If you never had a slot car catch fire you're doing it wrong.

I have let the smoke out of some, but I don't recall flames after it stopped.

I have let the smoke out of some, but I don't recall flames after it stopped.

I've seen a few.

The most impressive was Gerald Gabbard's Pro car, during qualifying, at the '86 Nats.

It stopped about three feet from where I was marshaling in the Deadman.

It was a leap of faith to pick it up vs leaving it.

I grabbed it by the front of the right wing and the fire went out on the second or third shake, just before I was going to toss it on the floor.

I've only watched the video on my phone.

I assume the car is already on fire as it comes into frame, vs catching on fire spontaneously.

Don,

The video is marked Filmoteca Espanola, which is part of the Ministry of Culture of Spain. "Its objective is to restore, investigate and conserve the film heritage of Spain and its diffusion."

Also marked with rtve.es, which is Spanish public television.

Not that this means it wasn't shot in Argentina, but my guess would be Spain unless you spotted something in the video I missed.

I've been trying to locate this video on YouTube for a good while and have failed, probably because this piece is probably a snippet from a longer video.

Hi Greg,

I saw the Espanola part, but thought it was a general archive for Spanish language stuff, not necessarily in Spain.

My guess was just because I was talking to a young Spanish enthusiast at Bordo last year, who told me he didn't think that Spain had any commercial racing in the '60s - but it was before he was born, so that was indirect... And I know that Argentina had some raceways.

But maybe I jumped to conclusions...

I don't really know and was simply looking around to see if I could confirm your supposition.

Pablo's fleunt in Spanish. I wonder if the narration could have any clues as to the location.

I'm unable to access the video because I don't do Facebook.

Thought maybe I could tell what country it was from the comments, but it's impossible. Could be a lot of slang in there.

Example, the first comment "Avui, aquesta nit, de fa 48 anys, per una cosa mooooolt, moooolt semblant a aquesta, em va canviar la vida...y es que al cap de tres anys d'aquesta filmació" ???

I'd have to actually hear it. Could be Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Brasil, or even Portugal.

PS: Greg, seems that somewhere on FB, PdL said that he thought it was in Paris - he recognized  the dentist! (Couldn't find the comment, but I'm sure you can!)

And in fact, the two tracks look like the photos I've seen of the track in Saint-Denis...

OK, I had to jump through several hoops, but this video clip is now on YouTube and I can easily embed it in Mike's first post. Looks like I snagged a higher quality version as well.

Good job, Greg.

I love the elevation changes..... both on the tracks, and the upper torso of the racer at  0:54 - 0:55.

Maybe those elevation changes (on the track) explain the custom (?) drop arm on the dentist's Dynamic car, at 0:24.

I call BS on the fire. Why would a fire erupt from the front of a car with the motor in the rear?

I think this was faked to make the film more "dramatic."

Cheers.

I agree, Bill.

If you look carefully the hood of the burning car is blackened almost to the base of the windshield.

Didn't Dynamic have a problem with "spontaneous combustion" back in the mid-'60s?

I never saw one of the Dynamics chassis catch fire. I did have a Cox chassis catch fire when one of my berzerko

rewinds lit off. By the way, it was a drag car on 24v.  if that helps the believeability. It also burned the track surface

before anyone could grab it and I was responsible for the repair.

Cox are diecast magnesium.

Dynamic, unless I am mistaken, are diecast aluminum.

You can see some staged, toy car, fire action at about 4:45, below;

The video was supplied by my friend Miguel Pereira, a slot car enthusiast living in Lisbon, Portugal. His father was the Cox Hobbies distributor in Portugal in the 1960s.

This is what I posted on my FB page:

"Great video showing Jean-Pierre Beltoise first in a Matra F2 at the Monthlery race track, then at the Opera raceway in Paris with slot cars. I believe that the dentist there is Peter Pre, who lived in Paris. He has now passed away. He was very famous in slot car racing circles and built a Cox Ford GT with a two-speed automatic transmission."

The raceway is the one that was near the Opera in Paris. I was there many times. It had two large tracks that were custom-built from AMF elements to fit the shape of the room.

As far as the car on fire, it is no joke, that car obviously shorted its braided contacts out and set itself on fire likely because of too much highly flammable liquid used on its brushes. It happened to me just the same once or twice in the past 50 years...

I hope that this clears up all questions?
