Like the mythical phoenix, SERRA keeps returning! The first race of the rebooted SERRA organization, spearheaded by Taylor Davis, with the able assistance of the very experienced (doesn't that sound better than old?) slotheads Eddie Fleming (tech inspector) and Chris Barnes (race director and he's one of the best in the business!) was held at the gorgeous SpeedZone Raceway in Peachtree City, GA on Saturday, February 4. All classes were run on the G3 Gerding King track.

Three IRRA® classes were raced: Stock Car, F1, and Can-Am, in that order.

Stock Car

Eleven racers presented their cars to Eddie for tech inspection where it was noted that the majority of the bodies were not in compliance with the IRRA® thickness specs and that most of the racers did not have bodies in their boxes that did meet the specs. A decision was made to allow the non-complying bodies to be used at this initial SERRA event, but Taylor and Eddie wish to inform racers that going forward, the IRRA® body thickness specifications in all classes will be fully enforced in the SERRA series. Fair warning!

Excellent race report, Greg.

I would like to thank each and every racer that attended our first race of the SERRA series. Without you it wouldn't be possible. Congrats to all!

Special thanks to Eddie, and Chris for keeping the cars in check, and keeping the race day on schedule!

It was a great race and everyone had a good time. Chris ran one of the best races I've attended in a long time, and Eddie did an fantastic job at tech. The race and tech was run by the book, as it should be.

So glad to see SERRA back and can't wait till the next stop at CMS next month. Thanks to Taylor Davis for making this all happen.

Congrats to Will for his clean sweep! He drove great all day and had very well prepared cars.

Hope to see everyone and even more in Marietta, GA, next month.

What I was impressed with about this race is how far some racers drove to support the "new" SERRA.

There were racers from multiple cities in AL: Anniston, Glencoe, Mobile, and Saraland, and one from Murfreesboro, TN. One racer is from Macon, GA, with most everyone else from suburbs all around Atlanta.

Nice to see the new series drawing participation from such distances.

Here's a few assorted candid shots worth showing before I delete them.

rdatwork.jpg

Chris Barnes' unique style of race directing at SpeedZone, a wireless keyboard in lieu of the kill switch more often used when standing instead of sitting. Bobby Robinson is marshaling the bridge and Kim Lander the donut.

tensionattech.jpg

There's can be a bit of tension at the tech table. Yep, that's the onlooking Tom Harrington's car in Eddie's hand.

CA.tech1.jpg

Bud Greene seems to be checking out the competition and I'd bet the car being inspected out of the photo is John Clow's.

Them Tennessee hillbillys are easy to spot, they're the ones wearing shorts and flip-flops the first week of February!

Thanks to Eddie for the great job in tech. Thanks to Taylor for putting everything together and thanks to Chris for running a very efficient show. 35 entries and I was able to get back to Murfreesboro before 10 PM!

I am looking forward to CMS. Does anyone know if there will be practice Friday night before the event?

Eddie has normal Friday night racing, but I'm sure you can pop in and work around the races. I know it's not ideal, but It would be unfair to ask him to schedule around it.

Yeah, I was wondering about that for CMS as well. I plan on getting there early Friday.

Are there any racing that goes on Friday on the Hillclimb?

Thanks for the super report and photos, Cheater.  :)

Can anyone elaborate on the Stock Car body tech issues?

"the majority of the bodies were not in compliance with the IRRA® thickness specs and that most of the racers did not have bodies in their boxes that did meet the specs"

From my easy chair I'm guessing these were all IRRA® approved bodies and the racers had nothing to do with them being out of specs.

Can we clarify? Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken the rule was put into place to insure the correct Lexan was pulled, i.e. .015" Lexan. I am unsure as to the cause for this incident, but the rules will be amended to reflect proper IRRA® specs.

Several bodies would not pass on the hood check. Are we allowed to add paint to the hood next go round?

Nope.

Using a micrometer to check thickness of hood, must be at least .012".

I hope this answers your question.

Good turn-out, and looks like everyone had a good time – except for maybe Eddie, serving as tech master.  :D

First off let me apologize for the obviously illegal interiors in some cars. I did not catch it (overlook the obvious).

Next let me apologize to anyone running a legal body that had to compete against less than legal bodies. It is unfair and I should have my a** kicked.

Other than the body situation all cars were checked and repaired/adjusted to be within the rules.

From the IRRA® Quick-Reference Guide, listed under both classes on page 2:

Will, I am sorry. I did not intend to say you were cheating. As I said I am sure that did not improve your performance. I was saying the photos of the cars showed something I should have caught in tech that I missed, my bad.
