I read in last year's R4 posting that the main tire choice was some form of Wonder rubber. Does that still hold?

And, what about the gear ratio on this King track and the power level? What is the track voltage?

Any tips will be appreciated.

I ran Retros two years ago and Wonder last year.

9/28 in all classes.

I think the power is 14.1, not 100% on that.

Hey Doc:

I always start with a 9/27 gear ratio and often go up a tooth or sometimes down a tooth on the crown gear as the conditions and motor dictate.  I'm not sure as to the exact voltage but it is "up there."

As for tires I (and some others) find that medium Thunder works very well.

That said I think there are a lot of guys running (JK and Koford?) soft and medium Wonder rubber. I'm not sure how many are using Kelly Retros but I'm sure there are a few, however that may be a bit soft for this track.

Last year I won GTC on Joe Dirt Wonder big hub, won Can-Am on JK Wonder small hub, and TQ'd F1 on Kelly Retros, but the Retros were too soft.

I ran 9/28 for gearing on the Hawks.

I wouldn't recommend Retros again, whatever Willy had for F1 was better than what I had LOL.

All great suggestions. From the tech sheets gearing is almost 95% 9/28. The predominate tire is JK #8703PPW followed by #8713PPW and Alpha Wonder.

Alpha's new soft Wonder is also starting to be used more and more and is virtually identical to the Joe Dirt tires.

Having never raced on or even seen this track, nailing down the gear ratio and getting close to the right rubber is a huge benefit to me.

I was on Kellys last year for GTC and Can-Am but that is because I prefer my cars to be tight, it's much more drivable for me.

Hey Doc:

Now that you have all of the "inside info" on how to go fast at the R4 you have no excuse for not winning.  :D

Did you mean 9/27?

8/27 would be more conservative than 9/28.

IOW, more acceleration and brakes, cooler running, but less top speed.

Mike,

Are you certain the "big ones" shooter refers to are tires? :)

Is your chassis jigged for bigger tires? You can definitely run different gearing if running bigger tires, but if the chassis is jigged for normal tires, the lack of handling in corners will be outweigh the gained straight line speed.

I did a search for the medium Thunder rubber that is recommended above. I came up with part#: TH-2017. Is that correct?

In a .850" tire with .500" full hub, you are correct, Doc.
