News 1 was at Buzz-A-Rama at 6 AM this morning with a film crew... they stayed for about 1-1/2 hours. They had a ball racing. It was great exposure...

Lets see how the weekend goes now. Probably packed.

Tony P/Howie Ursaner,

They say in the video that there "... were 50+ tracks at one time in the area."

Is that true? That's a lot of tracks!

Steve,

When I was a kid in the '60s there was a track in every town here on L.I.

In the '80s there were a dozen tracks to choose from.

Now there are 3.

I have been told (and admittedly have no data to confirm) that at the peak, there were 60 slot car raceways in the greater Atlanta area.

What a great video report.   :D

That yellow track with the wiggles looks challenging, having never tackled a track with wiggles before.  :laugh2:

When I was a kid there were five raceways that I could get to, and that was in Brooklyn by bus in 1966.

If you will allow me to answer for them, yes, there were at least that many in the New York City, Long Island, and north Jersey area in the mid-'60s.

The word was 200 in the Chicago area, at the absolute peak.

When guys my age, or older, come in, when I ask them where they raced, I'd say two-thirds of the time I'm not familiar with the place they mention.

I got my B-A-R license on that track, 10 laps in the black lane one minute. I did it with a Jail Door car.

Just about every town where I lived in Jersey had a track.

I'm not sure about the 200 claim, but I would be surprised if there was less than 100 in a one-hour radius.

I could walk to two.

An aside, a customer who worked at one of the area Tom Thumb's mentoned he had to take a lie detector test to get the job.

Unbeleiveble for a "young" guy like me .

My father told me, in our small (50.000 people) home town there were two commercial tracks in the '60s .

Today I have to drive 20 min. to our club track and two hours to the next club track .

And no commercial tracks nearer than five hours.

Schöne Grüße (Kind regards)

I remember in Brooklyn in the late '60s-early '70s there were about six tracks within 15 min of my house.

Now... only Buzzy.

It's amazing what a little TV time does...

Buzzy's phone was ringing off the hook yesterday. Over 25 calls from people who saw the NY News 1 story.

Right now in NJ we have The Race Place off of Rt.33... SpeedZone down by Ft. Dix... a place in Toms River... and I think one up in Patterson.

Yes, as a kid here in Red Bank they were like everywhere... I can think of four in proximity to each other...

Now while I'm here, does anybody have an unused decal sheet for the Monogram 1/24 '55 Chevy... '58 T-Bird...a nd '36 Ford... Just need color copies to re-make the water-slides for some resto projects of these cars... I have perfect sheets for the '40 Pick-Up and '34 Ford if you guys need to do the same thing... you are welcome to color copies.

I also have copies of those two cars instruction sheets.

Also trying to sniff out any Monogram parts of bodies and chassis for all of the above...

Thanks...
