I know this has been asked several times before but I can't find what I'm looking for.

What is the best additive to use in a tumbler with distilled water?  I've been using local water with ceramic media and liquid Dawn dish water soap.  The steel comes out tarnished but the brass seems to clean up pretty well.  I'm switching to distilled water and need to know what works well with it.

Thanks for your help.

Don

Your problem is probably using dish soap. You do not need additives of any kind.

This is the media and detergent I use:

Try that and I'll bet you'll find your South Carolina water works just fine.

What Pablo said! This works better than anything else I have ever used.

Go ahead and laugh. But, I bought the Harbor Freight 2 drum tumbler a few months ago. I made a long, 1 piece drum for it out of PVC pipe and was anxious to try it out. Didn't like the looks of the media at HF. I was going to order some ceramic, but was in a hurry. I went to Wally World and bought a bag of white aquarium gravel. Mixed it with water, lemon dish soap, and comet cleanser. Actually worked pretty good I thought. Still need to order some ceramic to see how much better it works.
