I've been doing mostly arms this past week, and while not as interesting as doing complete motors, these two are noteworthy.  I was asked to do a #30 wind, but with less turns and considerably more timing advance than I normally do.  What they're for?...beats me!  Anywho, these are reverse wound and on original Hawk stacks that I pressed new shafts into.  I was able to keep the coms almost full length here which I figure is a good thing.  Spacing-wise, they should only need a thin washer at each end (*depending on how much variation there is from setup to setup with these motors).  They should really whistle!

Well, I normally keep all my arms between 15 and 20 degrees advance max, and these are way beyond that...although not crazy by today's standards.  I am reluctant to say what the wind and timing are without getting the OK from the racer who ordered them David.  Just in case he has a formula he wants to call his own.

All right then. Now that you two are talking John, meet Dave.

John, remember that order of 16-d arms we did for a raceway in Ohio and were returned because we put too little timing in  the comm?

Well, I sent some to  Dave, here, and by cranking the endbel radically he built a motor that holds some kind of track record at the

Speedzone, New Jersey Raceway.   And those guys know their way around 16-d motors!

Just thought you might like to know what happens to some of the the arms you wind.

Looking good, too bad we can't get any of the specs!  What was the reason for re-using the old lams?

Hi Bill,

That's pretty cool alright.  The majority of arms and motors I send out, I don't really know what happens.  :D  Then again, I get PMs sometimes asking me for another arm like the one I wound for him several months before...and here I can't remember my own phone number!

Thanks John.  I don't know that the spec will make for a world-beater, but maybe I'll get the OK?

Bill,

I just refreshed one of those 16d Motors. It was used under race conditions for 1810 laps over the course of 5 months. The comm was trued to .197 last time it was rebuilt. Tonight it cleaned up at .194

Proslot could use some of your comms IMO

Hi Dave,

The coms I've seen from ProSlot seem fine to me, but I've never taken them apart to see how thick the shell is or get an idea about the way they're built.  The coms I get from Bill Bugenis are excellent for most any normal motor.  I've gotten some from Dan Miller as well, and those seem fine too.  ***The Chinese coms are a whole different thing and barely OK for an average #30 wind.  The old Kirkwood and Mura coms would still be lightyears better than those, even today.

I forgot to answer this.  I usually have some of these lying around that haven't been balanced.  When they're going back into the same motor, there's no reason not to use them, since they're fine.  The shafts can sometimes be out, so I mostly just replace them if I reuse the lams.

***Anyway, the timing is +30 degrees CCW :D

Hi Lee,

Nope, yours are out for balancing and grinding.

I just got an update on these two arms, and it seems 50/30 with 30 degrees advance is a very good combo in the Hawk.  The message was:

John,

Arm is outstanding on short tight flat track in ceramic Hawk setup.

I love it when a plan comes together :)

No, they're from Bill Bugenis.  The stock coms *might* have been OK on these arms, but I generally don't spend the time trying to resurrect them.  Also, with their narrower diameter and potential issues with segment overlap, I can't see a reason to use the narrower stock coms when doing all the work of building and winding a new arm.
