F-1 on the Royal – 4/25/17

For the first time in 2017 Retro F-1 racing returned to the American Royal this past week. Eight racers took to the track with the race run in 4/4 format.

Ricky Pratt and Ray Lee posted the only best-lap times below 4 seconds, checked out early, and left the rest of the field in the dust. Their cars were equally fast (separated by just .001 second) so it came down to driving. It was a close race but in the end Ray was able to take the win by just under one lap.

Down to the leaders by 21 laps, Richard Payne found himself all alone in 3rd place with his closest pursuer nine laps behind. In 4th place, Bob “Woody” Hazelwood led the rest of the almost evenly matched pack, with Dan Savage, Richard Girvin and Doug Uhlman all in close pursuit. Dick Griffin finished out the field.

Driver, laps completed, best lap time/lane:

            1)      Ray Lee                       347/14       3.945   BL

            2)      Ricky Pratt                   346/16       3.944   GN

            3)      Richard Payne             325/5         4.008   BL

Sorry, no photos of slot cars, I was returning from Florida after a two-hour delay, on Spirit Airlines, sitting with my knees just under my chin in a non-reclining seat, wishing I was at Modelville (or still at Margaritaville!). Here's a photo of a flip-flop and a pop-top (it's art...in the lobby at Margaritaville, not Modelville!):

I never quite understood the line in the song "I blew out my flip flop".

Are some pneumatic? lol

Fun fact.

When top G7 racer, Mario Schone, lived behind the Iron Curtain, in East Germany, he would cut up flip flops, to make his own tires.
