Retro Stock Cars on the Figure 8 – 5/9/17

A relatively large field of eleven Retro Stock Cars took to the Figure 8 for this week’s Tuesday night retro-race at MVH.  It has been a few months since the Stock Car class has been on the “8” as we’ve tried this class on the Royal once and a couple of times on the King in the interim. There was talk this evening about maybe trying stockers on the Sovereign some time soon, which seemed to be enthusiastically received! Even with 11 racers, we were still one marshal shy of running all 8 lanes, so the race was run on the middle 6.

Dom Luongo and Larry Labounty both made rare Tuesday night appearances as they were meeting to prepare for the upcoming NERR finale on the King at MVH this weekend and took the opportunity to race stock cars.

With five track calls during the first ninety seconds of the race, it was clearly going to be an interesting evening. Stock car lap times have dropped into the low-to-mid 3 second range so staying in the slot can have a big impact on the outcome. Peter Lentros is well aware of this as he saw his relatively fast car struggle to keep pace due to multiple ambushes from other racer(s). Dom and Ricky Pratt avoided much of the chaos and pulled out a significant lead on the rest of the field with Dom ultimately taking the win by 4 laps over Ricky while the third step on the podium was being contested by a group of five mid-pack racers trailing by almost a dozen laps.  Dick Griffin and Ray Lee were in a close battle for 6th place (2 lap gap at the end) and Rich Girvin and Peter Lentros were in a similarly close race for 4th (also finishing with a 2 lap gap). Dave Panich managed to avoid much of mayhem on his way to the bottom step of the podium by a slightly wider margin. (6 laps).

Although somewhat off the pace the three-way battle for 8th was the closest race of the evening as Larry edged out Doug Uhlman by 4 track sections while Richard Payne trailed by just one lap. Though posting the 6th fastest best-lap time, Dan Savage couldn’t stay in his lane and ended up rounding out the field in 11th place.
