Stock Cars on the King – 8/1/17

The MVH Tuesday night retro series started a brief August schedule (see below for info on “Closed for Vacation" dates) running stock cars on the G-7 King this past week. A field of eight racers went through tech to race in the 4/4 format.

The first heat started in chaos as there were five track calls in the opening five laps. Fortunately, things settled down as the racing progressed or it would have been a very long night! John Weaver jumped to an early lead and by the switch to the inside lanes had logged 144 laps to second place Ray Lee's 137 laps.Trailing Ray by one lap, Bob “Woody" Hazelwood and Dave Panich were in a dead heat for 3rd with 136 laps each while Ricky Pratt and Richard Girvin were in 5th and 6th places with 134 and 132 laps. Richard Payne ended the first half in 7th place with 127 laps while Dick Griffin closed out the field with 110 laps.

The tight racing continued onto the inside lanes as Woody closed the gap to Ray and Ricky zoomed past Dave to mount a challenge for a podium finish. At the checkered flag Weaver easily took the win by a 13-lap margin but the race for second and third was as close as it could be as Ray was able to hang on to take 2nd by just one track-section over Woody. But the best drive of the night was by Ricky as he logged 5 more laps in the second half than the first and was in the chase for the podium, coming up less than a half a lap shy of catching Woody and Ray. On the other hand, Dave moved backwards in the 2nd half, logging one fewer lap than in the first and ending up two laps down to Ricky and 7 laps up on 6th place finisher Rich G.  Though his position didn’t change, Richard P. also didn’t fare too well in the second half as he logged 3 fewer laps than in the first half, putting him in 7th place, 16 laps up on Dick Griffin in 8th

Weaver posted the fastest and only sub-5 second lap of the evening while Dave and Rich G tied for second fastest lap with identical 5.046 second times.
