As sort of a fun aside, I took the points totals for 2016-17 and combined them (counting GT1-A and GT1-B points as equal) to create a list of the top ten racers to watch for in the 2017-18 season.

We'll lead off with #10 on the list... Tom "TR" Rowell!

In many regards, the 16-17 season was one to forget with TR who definitely was a bad luck magnet. However, with a best finish of 4th in GT1-B in the huge field at HMS showed that the man who is tied for second on the GT1-B All Time Win List still has a lot of fight to go. TR took his 2016-17 in stride and should be considered one of the GT1-B front-runners as well as a contender in GTP, long one of his favorite classes.

#9 on our list is the highest scoring individual to only run two classes, as he didn't field a Group 10 car for the 2016-17 season. Your 2016-17 GT1-B Champion, Brandon Barricello!

Brandon started as a weekly rookie in 2016 and made the huge jump to Ohio Challenge Cup in a hurry. Teaming up early on with the potent Shirey squad, Brandon scored wins on both the HMS King and the UK Black at Washington. This coupled with a top ten finish in GTP made for a breakout year for the GT1-B champ. Going into 2017-18, expect to see him in the fight in GT1-A and GTP, as well as making his initial foray into Group 10.

8th on the list represents one of the series' true rookies AND the youngest year-long competitor for 2016-17. Haley Halfhill of Haven Raceway's "Halfhill Clan" was a story of tenacity and steady learning. Racing away from her home track for the first time, Haley captured a best finish of 6th at Washington as well as running both the Group 10 and GTP classes. Going into 2017-18 she's teamed up with the Henes operation as well as found a friend and mentor in WSC's Ron Culp. We're expecting big things in Haley's sophomore season!

7th on the list is an OCC veteran and the owner of the Pennsylvania Posse's home base at NESCR, Lester Lucas!

Lester Lucas is one of the OCC's diehards and it shows in his attendance and his commitment. Scoring his second 3rd place in the GT1-B standings and picking up a 3rd place finish at WSC in GT1-B, Long-Haul Lester missed no races and always wrapped up the day with a smile no matter how much rough luck in DNF's he experienced. Strongest on the short tracks, like his own Reverse Orange and the flat UK Black at WSC, keep your eyes on the old guy who's still after that elusive GT1-B championship and further top-tens in Group 10 and GTP.

6th on the list is a racer well-known to any Ohio Challenge Cup competitor, the Mad Mexican himself, Jay Sabala!

Jay made 2016-17 a year to remember with a best of 5th in GT1-A at Haven Raceway and a big points haul despite missing the Fastraxx round. A shame as the tight twisty Royal tends to suit his more patient style. A former GT1-B champion and the OCC's Treasurer, Jay has made big preparations for the upcoming season, abandoning his recalcitrant Ruddock for a fresh DiFalco and focusing on eliminating setup dead-ends from his always expansive fleet. Rest assured, the Mad Mexican will be a force to be reckoned with in 2017-18.

5th on the list and routinely one of the strongest travelers on the OCC trail is Ron Vincek!

Wherever the OCC goes, you'll generally find former HO racer turned OCC powerhouse Ron Vincek at the sharp end of the grid. Ron scored a 2nd at Race o' Rama in GTP as his best finish of the year, along with a 3rd at HMS in GT1-A, and was in championship podium contention in all three classes. For 2017-18, Ron has stepped down from the Series Director position so he can focus more on racing hard and having lots of fun along the way.

OK Amigos,

Fourth on the list would be our own OCC Director Justin Porter. Always in contention with rides from the Mad Mexican and Haven Raceway Stables. Had a break out  year in the 2015/16 series by winning GT1B and made the move up for the 2016/17 season. Good promising drives through out the year only to have gremlins interrupt possible podiums. When the gremlins were napping Justin was able to pull a 2nd place on the podium at HMS in GTP  and a couple of third places GT1A and Group 10, contending with some of the finest racers in this region. Never satisfied he has his sight set on another banner season for the up and coming year.

3rd on the list is an up-and-coming star in Ohio's flexi scene, coming out of a family of racers, Jeff Henes!

Jeff had an astonishing 2016-17, winning not only in GT1 at Haven and Fastraxx, but also winning in GTP at Haven. A man of tall height and hot temper, Jeff has put his competitive spirit to work and come away with 2nd in the GT1-B Championship and 3rd in the GTP Championship. With 2017-18 bringing a move to GT1-A and word that Jeff will be turning wrenches for both Haley Halfhill and further OCC rounds for young Jeffrey Henes, keep your eyes out for the H&H banner.

2nd on the list is one of the strongest competitors in recent memory in the Ohio Challenge Cup, Michigan's own David Decoster!

With a host of podiums through the 2016-17 season, with a top finish of 2nd in Group 10 at Haven, David Decoster represents a model of consistency in OCC competition. Friendly and instantly recognizable with his ever-present cigarillo and his splatter painted bodies, we go into 2017-18 expecting even more speed as Decoster looks to reclaim his champion status after being relegated to the #2 spot in all three classes...

And at #1, he's the Ohio Challenge Cup's all-time win leader and your 2016-17 GT1-A, Group 10, and GTP Champion, Eric Shirey!

After having taken time off to race retro and relax, Eric Shirey came back with a vengeance in 2016-17, capturing sweeps at Mark's Model World and a Race o' Rama, a feat only matched by Greg Mayer at Washington Slotcar Club this past year. A major threat every time he unpacks his box, "Kujo Paws" sits on top of the OCC heap and faces renewed charges from inside and outside the series with three crowns to defend. It'll be exciting to see what he accomplishes in 2017-18!
