After the "Ace" list, I felt it would be a good idea to reflect on the racers who made statements during the year with their performances. Whether fast locals or visiting pros, these are racers who scored wins or podiums through the 2016-17 season but didn't have points totals that reflected their speed.

We'll start off with a racer who needs very little introduction as his name is found underneath retro chassis the world over, Bud Bartos!

Picking up GT1-A wins at Haven and HMS, with podiums at Fastraxx, one can only wonder what the points would have looked like if Bud Bartos had run the full Ohio Challenge Cup season! While the retro world remains his focus, we can likely expect to see the world's fastest thumb make at least one visit during the 2017-18 season.

The next Wild Card isn't a shock as a winner given his records and notoriety. His own OCC history includes both a GT1-B and a Group 10 championship, Willy Custer!

On a rare off-weekend from the retro world, we saw Mr. Custer join in at Fastraxx and pick right up where he usually does, and true to form walked off with a strong Group 10 win. Always fast and always a man to beat, it's definitely a hope that Willy makes more time for flexis in 2017-18.

Next up on the list was the shock win of the season, the big quiet guy from Race o' Rama, Jim Pace Jr!

In the biggest GTP field of the year, on one of only two king tracks on the 2016-17 season, the GT1-B racer from the Race o' Rama Paperclip made his mark as someone to watch by picking up a big win in GTP. He backed this up with podiums at his home track and a 4th in GTP on the Mark's Model World King. We're expecting big things out of Jim as he moves up to GT1-A and has made his intentions known to tackle the full OCC calendar in 2017-18. With three king tracks in 2017-18, he has plenty of opportunities for big wins.

Any trip to Mark's Model World brings with it a host of very fast locals, and 2016-17 was no different. Next on the Wild Card list, Greg Miller!

One of a host of regulars at MMW, Greg Miller put on a speed clinic in GT1-B at the fast Gerding King. When the day was over, he'd claimed a vital win and made it clear that the locals were not going to let the OCC regulars have an easy day. We're definitely looking forward to racing with Greg again when the Ohio Challenge Cup visits MMW in 17-18 and hoping he puts his skills on display at other dates.

This next post started by covering one racer, but I'm expanding it a bit to talk about the toughest group of locals on the Ohio Challenge Cup tour. In the fine tradition of sprint car racing, Pennsylvania is home to the locals to beat, and as such the OCC has its own PA Posse to deal with.

This year, in visiting both NESCR and WSC, the Challenge Cup tour had to contend with some fierce competitors. At NESCR, GT1-B belonged to Lorenzo Frietze who made use of track experience on the tricky Reverse Orange. Also benefiting from lots of laps on the tight track was the touring doctor himself, Nate Graham, who claimed a solid 3rd for himself. Meanwhile, Penn-Ohio Board Member and fierce competitor Dan Ebert grabbed the GT1-A win for himself along with a podium in Group 10. Also grabbing podiums at North East were Jim Verga and Bob Stanley, both of whom showed great speed throughout the day.

This group, led by track owner Lester Lucas, is sure to make any visit East of the border difficult!

The next name is one who arrived in a big way in 2016-17 right to the front of the pack, Greg Mayer!

Greg Mayer is one of the members of the Washington Slot Car Club and is easily one of their headlining racers. From his initial speed shown during a triple podium outing at Mark's Model World, Greg would feature for a GT1-A podium at North East and would capture a complete sweep at his home track, the flat UK Black at WSC. Traveling in tandem with WSC owner Ron Culp who would claim a GT1-B 2nd at WSC himself, Greg has already made it clear that we can expect to see a lot more of the bright red Alpha machines in 2017-18!
