While looking for something else, I came across this.

The Christmas 1965 issue of Boy's Life, with a lot of cool slot car ads, along with a good one for Schwinn bikes.

Thanks, Mike.

Yep, Boy's Life always had a lot of slot car ads in the '60s, including prizes for selling subscriptions. They also had five or six articles over the years, the last one in 1982!

And on eBay, some sellers still think the Pinewood Derby cars are slot cars...

I remember the Revell and Strombecker home set ads.  Never could swing the 89 dollar price for the four-lane Strombecker set.

Thanks, Mike!

How would you like to kill a bear with a bow and arrow? Where do I sign up?!?

Just imagine the outrage ("from all sides") if that ad appeared... in any magazine ... today...

Thanks for posting, Mike. This brought back lots of memories.

Keep it in the slot,

Never complacent - striving to race to ever increasing levels of mediocrity!

The only thing I know about slot cars is if I had a good time when I leave the building! I can count the times I didn't on one hand!

Entitlement:
The notion that one can have their slot car racing and EAT IT, too!

My brother was big into Boy Scouting, so I remember Boy's Life, but I don't remember the slot car ads.

I was a bit surprised to see the Chapparal was already available.

That era must of been the dawn of the Sting Ray style bike, but not quite the "krate" era.

I like the ad for the one Rat Fink model I never had. Had the rest, plus all the Roth car models. Monogram had the corner on these, and were a level up in difficulty above the other model companies.

That was a wonderful 'trip' back in time.

Some random stuff...

I completely forgot that felling of going into the 'Scout Store'  and marching in the town parades. We never did Pinewood that I remember.

Page 58 - Sears branded AMF Renegade III for me. It was awesome. 3 speed handgrip and handbrakes only. Metallic gold with a Leopard skin seat molded surface like it had fingerprints. Fast and could spin the pedals backwards to be cool.

Added a really tall 'sissy bar', gen and full lighting and a joker playing card on a clothes pin. Then later came the side-saddle baskets for the paper route.

I had two of the bikes pictured in the Schwinn ad. I had a candy purple Stingray, that I got in 6th grade. I rode it until I started driving, then sold it to buy a used metallic green Varsity that I took to college to get around on.

Good thread, Mike.

Yea, marching in the parade.

In sixth grade I was a Scout and in the grade school band. I was supposed to march in both groups for the Memorial Day parade. The Scouts were first in line, carrying a huge American flag. The band was near the end. The parade route back then ran around the downtown area, with the start and finish only two blocks away from each other, so when I finished with the Scouts, I ran around to the start area, and took off the Scout shirt and put on the white shirt and yellow sweater of the band and marched again. I was the only band member with the band sweater and Khaki pants.

It would have been alright except that the trombones were in the front row, so everyone saw that I had the wrong pants. My dad filmed it in 8mm, and loved showing that to friends and family.

Wow... Did scrolling through that ever bring back some memories. Life sure seemed a lot simpler back then.
