The usual suspects gathered for another bloodletting at The Doghouse in Gilbert, S.C. on Saturday, Aug. 26. As always, we enjoyed the racing, the conversation, the trash-talking, and most of all, the lunch provided by David Erickson. Grilled Bratwurst with potato salad. All I needed was a cold beer, but I digress.

Although we rarely have a large group, it's a good bunch of racers.

From L to R: Richard Sylvester (and Lady, his dog in his lap); David Erickson; Dan Parker (AKA Rocky the Flying Squirrel, for reasons I'll be glad to explain some other time); Marty Cwiakala; yours truly, Jim Beasley.

As you can see from the pic, our weapons-of-choice on this day were Retro Can-Ams. For the most part, we follow IRRA® rules, with minor exceptions.

The racing was quick. In fact, I can recall feeling that I was working myself into a slight sweat from the intensity. We have a four-lane track, which means one sit-out / turn marshal each heat and five heats each of three rounds.

Richard made a nice start, but seemed to experience some controller issues in the second round. He finally began to find his groove again, but it was too late. Marty had another strong showing, too, keeping the heat on all of us. Dan recently experienced an extended layoff from slots, but we were glad to have him back in the fold racing with us again. And David was mistakenly prepared to race flexis, not Can-Ams. No prep time spent getting his car ready.

When all was said and done, my tuning fork chassis took top honors:

I really believe the tuning fork is the way to go. I've built a second one that I plan to use in our next Retro gathering.

Next month: Flexis!

Until then, keep it in the slot,

jb

Someone has to come in last. This race it was my turn!  ;-)

The hardest part is getting used to racing on such a sloped surface!

Nice report, could you show some pictures of the track next time?

Billy, I'm pretty sure the track is the one that Jay Guard used to have. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's a pic from Jay's now-sold place in Anniston:

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

That's the one, Greg. Great track, and we've put in many hours on it. Sorry I didn't include more of the track, Billy. As you can see, it's a fun layout.

Anyone interested in joining us for either a monthly race or one of our weekly get-togethers, drop me a line here on the blog and I'll steer you in. Otherwise, you're not likely to locate the place. We'd love to have you join us.

I've run some laps on that track and it's a very unique layout.

And Jay did a fabulous job rehabbing it, too.

The story is that it may be the very first track Steve Ogilvie ever made.

Chris, you know we'd enjoy having you come join us. We might even offer you lunch.  :D  But "last"? Doubtful, my friend.

And David, keep that Flexi handy and ready to go. The September race should be ba!!s to the walls racing!
