Florida residents, I'm starting this thread for you as a Slotblog focal point in case Irma comes your way.

I'll get the ball rolling by saying, Slotblog really helped me during my evacuation of Hurricane Katrina.

I had lots of good offers of safe havens and I really appreciated them. Slot car people are good neighbors.

I live in a large, cooled, pet friendly second story apartment in southern Mississippi.

Just me and my small dog, JoJo. I have enough room for maybe a two-person slot car family with one cat or one small dog.

First come, first served, and I reserve the right to choose who I think would be a good fit. Send me a PM.

Hopefully Irma will hook east to Bimini and this thread will die.

Pablo

Thanks, Don :)

I don't know if I made it clear, my intention is for this thread to be a safe haven source of info.

Any time you have a 185 MPH system near Puerto Rico and coming about 280 degrees on a straight path, it's like a bullet in the chamber.

You don't know when, or if, it may hook right. Or how much it will hook right.

Slot car people are good people. Let's take care of ourselves.

I'd like to make the same offer as Pablo did. I have a pole barn that houses my slot car track and workshop. I can put up to four people in one family in the raceway. You'd have heat, air conditioning, bathroom with shower, refrigerator, TV and microwave, plus you'd have a slot car track to play on. LOL.

The only two downfalls would be you'd have to sleep on air mattresses and come to Oxford, OH, which is about 30 miles northwest of Cincinnati.

PM me if you are interested.

Very kind of you Pablo. Even without Irma that would probably be fun. I hope others will take your lead and offer haven for others.

In 1992 after hurricane Andrew, a Category 5, smashed south Florida, I spent the next four days volunteering at the Tampa distribution center for the Salvation Army unloading donated items, sorting it all, and loading trucks on their way to the relief effort; it was non-stop; I ached for a week after, but the smile lasted longer. In 2004 I just happened to be doing disaster construction work and saw firsthand what Category 4 hurricane Charley did (as well as hurricanes Francis and Jeanne), and is not something I wish to ever see again, or want anyone to ever see, much less experience. It’s one thing to see it on a TV, and quite another to be standing in the middle of it…

As for hurricane Irma, well, times have changed; personally for me it’s a wait and see scenario with little option. My first-floor condo in south Tampa is in a Zone D evacuation area, but evacuation is not an option. My first priority and obligation will be to Tampa General Hospital where I work (a relatively large 1011-bed hospital, and one of two Level-1 trauma centers in Florida); my “work-week” is between Friday night and Monday morning, so odds are I’ll be at TGH by the time we all have some idea where Irma is going, and possibly when this goes down, however this also depends on Irma and the appropriate disaster plan TGH puts in effect.

Joey is my big concern. You’ve met him; he’s not such a bad little guy, even though he hangs out with me... Still trying to plan out my options for him…

In the meantime, think I’ll try to get over to Fast Eddie’s Raceway tomorrow. Hey, you gotta have fun any chance you can get it.

The last I saw from the webcam was flying debris, perhaps some fires and flashes - then blackout. Did seem very, very evil!

Here is my Hurricane tip:

If you evacuate and the power goes out for days and you can't get back home anyway,

you'll have a very pungent mess in your refrig and freezer to deal with upon return.

Avoid it by bagging everything up in heavy duty 55G bags and tying a knot in it.

When you return and it's ruined, simply carry the bags to the trash.

Much better than having a big smelly mess to clean up :victory:

If it's not ruined, remove the stuff from the bags and thank your lucky stars :sun_bespectacled:

Here's another: if you decide to evacuate and start calling to find a hotel, they will already be booked up.

What to do? Find the smaller, independently owned motels, not the chains. It will be much easier to find a vacancy.

During Hurricane Charlie I didn't have water for about 4 to 5 days.

Just don't stock up on drinking water.

I have 5 gallon buckets filled with water.

It comes in handy like the important toilet flush, washing hands, sponge bath, Etc.

You can use garbage cans as well. Leave the clothes washer full. At least for the toilet flush. 💯

Last communication I had with Reggie was last night about midnight. Nothing since then. Power is out and no internet. It will probably take a few days to hear from anyone there. I have other contacts there and will update if I hear anything. St Maarten took a direct hit... pretty bad... :(

I hope Reggie makes it out OK. After the 2013 storm that took out his raceway I wish him the best this time. My cousin lives in Puerto Rico and has been evacuated off the beachfront. Last I heard from her was about an hour ago.

Would love to hear from all FL-based Slotbloggers to know they have prepared for this massive storm and feel they're sheltered in a safe place.

Rollin Isbell, Bill Pinch, Gator Bob (especially), DOCinCocoa, Marcus Ramos, TRP-Phil, Danny Zona, Brian Ambrose, Biscuit, etc., etc.

Not worried about Jay Guard, as he and the missus are in Alaska – what perfect timing!

I'm heading to TN where my sister lives. I live near the Hakifax river so I'm worried about flooding.

I believe Biscuit is staying but he isn't near a flood zone.

I've had many slot racers text me letting me know I have a place to stay if needed.

It is well appreciated. Thank you.

I hope the best for everybody involved.

Bugging out from the banks of the St. Johns River to higher ground.

Here in Central Florida, I will go outside Sunday 2 AM into my 5th eye?... Elena, Charley, Jeanne, Frances, and let me tell you - when 100 mph winds happen, trees break. The storm bands sound like 100 freight trains coming at you. This sux...

Tonight will be the night for Hurricane Partying! Be safe everyone... tomorrow businesses will start shutting down.

I heard there is a race at P-1 tonight NASCAR and JK GT1 RTR. Early start time, 6 PM.

You are forgiven this time... it's EVIL vs Irma. Easy to guess the name on the chassis I do this weekend. I'm soldering till the power goes off. Got to keep busy and not sit here and worry about it. Just hope it doesn't morph into a sharknato.

Hey Thanks for caring.

These things 'wobble' and you really don't know where they land until it goes by.

I stay and fight.
I would rather go face to face with the wrath of God than be stuck out there in no mans land with a rash of fools out of gas in traffic.

If you leave it could be a long time before you can get back in and find your were looted. My whole life is here.

Been through many 'weather events' over my life.

Off the top of my head.

- 1991 called 'The Perfect Storm'  NYS

- 1993 called 'The Storm of the Century' or the Great Blizzard of 1993 NYS

- 2004 FL.

- Hurricane Charley I just got out of the hospital 10 days earlier from getting the greatest gift of life EVER. A kidney transplant.

Putting up the storm panels I split my gut, bled from the staples and Jackson bulb  and developed a bad hematoma the size of a grapefruit. But I made it through and kept my family safe. We only got skirted and flooding.

- Hurricane Jeanne Cat 3ish bitch 2.5 - 3 ft. of water in the streets. No power,~ 8 days, no cell or landline

- Hurricane Francis another very nasty bitch No power, ~ 10 days, no cell or landline

- 2011 Hurricane Matthew the Eye was 20-30 miles offshore. The 360 deg wind shift was amazing. Est. wind here 85 sustained 108 gusts.

- I don't even want to talk about the many years of wild fires right here. my land boarders 10s of thousands of acres of protected of 'Pine Flatwoods'.

As Rick Moore said above - is not something I wish to ever see again, or want anyone to ever see, much less experience. It’s one thing to see it on a TV, and quite another to be standing in the middle of it…

I look at as a war with nature, an adventure, a challenge to protect myself, family and property.

Ready!

140 MPH rated construction (Miami-Dade) code 1.5 miles from the water. Added $7700 (2004 post hurricane money) in additional wind protection of storm panels and garage door post and anchor system.

6260kw 10HP gen set.

35 gals. gas cans.

55 gals diesel drum.

5 24pack cases of water, 10 one gal jugs,  250 gal. untreated potable well water.

Tractor with loader, tow chains and straps, small chainsaw.

Unspecified qty. of Hornaday ZombieMax  "just in case" the power is out for an extended period. lol

War games are over, scenarios played out, plan it place.

Ready! :good: Now go WIN! :victory:

I'm getting to old for this s**t.  :dash2:

I’ve been called a lot worse things than “etc”, most of them warranted…

Turns out I’m not working tonight (otherwise I’d be asleep now); Tampa General Hospital put in hurricane disaster plan; Team A (not me) reports starting tonight through storm, and Team B (me) relieves them when it passes, so I still got to be around Tampatown... Forecast track keeps moving to the west now, but, as we all know too well, it will go where it goes; we’ll see.

Joey and I will be riding it out at the condo…

I can’t stop doing the “Ride of the Valkyries” thing while I’m trying to get stuff done today…

We're riding it out in Jacksonville. We're not in an evacuation zone nor a flood zone and are at the high end of the street. We keep a "hurricane cabinet" well-stocked from early summer through fall so we don't have to fight the madness at the stores. Have water. Have Vienna sausages. Have a generator. Have prayer!

So as long as the oak trees don't end up on the house, we're going to ride it out.

Doesn't mean it won't get scary.

Of course ... I have another whole set of worries about our place on Treasure Island. It's on Boca Ciega Bay and is pretty close to the Gulf.

Wobble, wooble... duck and cover

As usual this is going to suck.

Rick, my daughter is on B team at Indian River Med Cent. She wanted to bolt out of state but they fire you if you if you don't show up when the bell rings. Last year (Mathew) they fired two great nurses, one a 12-year vet there.

Wobble, wobble... as it lines up a strike. :clapping:  High and outside slider to you westcoasters... for the moment.

We have to see when she makes hard right turn north.

Factoid - Female-named hurricanes are deadlier .  :shok:  :sarcastic_hand:
By Max Londberg

As Irma storms toward the Caribbean and Florida, now is an appropriate time to revisit a study on how sexism kills during hurricanes.
Female-named hurricanes are far deadlier than male-named ones, according to the 2014 study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

How is that possible? Sexism, and more specifically the stereotypical perceptions often held on the basis of gender, according to the study.

“These experiments show that gender-congruent perceptions of intensity and strength are responsible for male-named hurricanes being perceived as riskier and more intense than female-named hurricanes,” the authors wrote.

Their findings — based on data from 94 hurricanes that made landfall in the U.S. from 1950 to 2012 — were telling. While hurricanes with masculine names caused an average of 15.15 deaths, those with female names caused 41.84 deaths. (Data from Hurricane Katrina and Audrey were removed as outliers.)

The authors also conducted lab experiments in which they confirmed that a storm with a masculine name markedly increased people’s perceptions of its intensity and danger. Female-named hurricanes were perceived as weaker.
In addition, participants were less likely to follow a voluntary evacuation order if a hurricane had a female name.
These stereotypical perceptions held true for all genders of the study participants.
“These findings have important implications for hurricane preparedness and public safety,” the authors wrote.
Even the early naming mechanism for hurricanes was sexist; hurricanes were once only given female names, “a practice that meteorologists of a different era considered appropriate due to such characteristics of hurricanes as unpredictability,” the authors wrote, citing the “Encyclopedia of Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Cyclones.”

Prior to 1978, all hurricanes had female names, too.

We like surprises. No one can critize anyone for not evacuating or blaming some inept politician for slow reactions. We live "in the now".  Sonic's shop and my home aren't far from one of the most notorious faultlines in SoCal.... so it it lets loose it'll be a big ride...

Now back to the topic: Irma. Please everyone take care, be safe, and may this storm end quickly.
