What's New at the San Diego County Fair
Released: May 13, 2008
DEL MAR, Calif. The June 14 opening of the 2008 San Diego County Fair is just around the corner. Favorite rides, food, exhibits, contests, and entertainment will return, and new features will create fond memories of their own for Fairgoers.
A New Theme
With a summer of big sports events here in San Diego County (the U.S. Open) and in China (the Olympic Games), the Fair's 2008 theme is "Summer of Sports", a celebration of sports and athletes in San Diego County and around the world. The theme will be reflected in a newly-created exhibit presented by Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics. The exhibit will be located in the Summer of Sports Exhibit building, just west of the O'Brien Gate, and in games and activities throughout the Fairgrounds. Both traditional and nontraditional sports will be celebrated. A different sport will be highlighted each day in the exhibit with interactive games and demonstrations, and appearances by Olympic athletes including Shannon McMillan and Steve Scott; professional athletes such as former Padre Tony Gwynn, retired boxer Julio Cesar Chavez and jockey Julie Krone; and amateur athletes.
The Fair has partnered with the United States Olympic Committee, San Diego Hall of Champions, the California Surf Museum, Upper Deck, and many other organizations to display extensive collections of collegiate and professional sports collectibles, as well as historic Olympic memorabilia.
New Entertainment
Pop/R&B star Fergie is just one of the top entertainers who will perform for the first time at the Fair during the San Diego Summer Concert Series, presented by Beck’s. Fergie will appear on June 27 on the Grandstand Stage. Other first-time Fair acts to perform at the same venue will include The Guess Who on June 17 with the returning Grand Funk Railroad; Doodlebops Live! on June 21, Los Huracanes del Norte on June 22, Cartel on June 25, B.B. King on June 26, Intocable and Los Horóscopos de Durango on June 29, Sugarland on July 1, Little Big Town on July 2 and Boston on July 3. Tribute bands paying homage to the Rolling Stones, U2 and Hank Williams Sr., as well as the original classic rock bands Canned Heat, Rare Earth, and Blood, Sweat & Tears will make their first appearances. Regional bands new to the Fair also will entertain crowds.
New Food
The world's largest barbecue, the Outlaw Grill, will make its Fair debut in the Sparkletts Water Infield. Measuring 20 feet high, weighing 27 tons and covering nearly 100 feet of grill space, the massive piece of equipment can cook more than 1,000 items simultaneously. New food items at other food booths will include grilled Caesar salad, fish sliders, deep-fried SPAM®, street tacos, carne asada fries and deep-fried macaroni and cheese on a stick.
New Rides
Two new rides, StarFlyer and Speed, will offer adventure and thrills. In StarFlyer, a tower ride, guests sit in double-seat swings as they are lifted 140 feet high into the air, and then spun around at speeds of about 44 miles per hour while traveling backwards, forwards, up and down. The pendulum ride Speed lives up to its name, generating more than 4 Gs as it swings 120 feet in the air.
New Contests
Creativity and skill could win participants a blue ribbon in three new food competitions: Zucchini Race Contest on June 28, where entrants attach wheels to a zucchini, then decorate and race it; Make it With Malt-O-Meal on June 21, a recipe contest; and the Tailgate Party Food contest on June 30. Some of the oldest and most unusual Fair souvenirs will be displayed during the new Fair Memorabilia Competition on July 3. New kids' contests match the Fair's theme, including Best Sports Short Story, Sports Artwork, Sport Memory Box and Sports Pennant. Patriotism and sewing skills will be displayed during the new Quilt of Valor quilt block contest on the Fourth of July. Judges will choose the best red, white and blue quilt block, and all will be donated to the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
New Exhibits
New exhibits will focus on agricultural topics past and present in the AgriFair building. "Farm Life: A Century of Change" will chronicle how farm life has changed over the past 100 years; a new hydroponics exhibit will show how to grow plants in water; "Goats for Hire" will explore how goats are used to clear dry brush and keep fire danger down; and in "Sheep to Shawl," participants will card, spin and weave wool into shawls, all in one day.
In O’Brien Hall, visitors will pick up environmental tips at the new "Green is Easy" exhibit; the new Garden Bug Party exhibit will show how to use safe pests to control bugs in home gardens; and the Paul Ecke Jr. Flower & Garden Show, presented by Think Blue and SDG&E®, will have new gardens and landscapes celebrating the theme "Sports in the Garden."
New in the Sparkletts Water Infield, a Sports Arena for youngsters will offer basketball, mini golf, bowling and other activities; new competitive divisions in the Kids' Best contests will feature Recycled Art, Scrapbooking and other contests; and the first Marble Tournament of the 21st Century hosted by Vietnam veterans on July 5 in the San Diego Pavilion will benefit Operation Homefront. A Butterfly Barn and archery demonstrations also will be located in the Sparkletts Water Infield.
The San Diego County Fair is the largest annual event in San Diego County and the fifth largest fair in the United States, drawing more than 1.2 million visitors each year. The Fair will be open June 14 through July 6, 2008, and closed on the first two Mondays (June 16 and 23). Gates open daily at 10 a.m.; exhibits close at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Fun Zone closes at approximately midnight.
