The Ohio Challenge Cup invaded HMS Speedways in Bellevue on October 21, 2017, and it was an astonishing day for competition with tremendous fields in all four categories and hugely impressive racing.

GT1-B started off the day with fourteen entrants, a welcome return to form for the class. Running in two groups of seven, it was local hot shot Alex Stoudinger who would ultimately take the win out of the second of the two mains. Fifth after having missed the opener was perennial GT1-B contender Tom TR Rowell. Sixth in another strong showing from the Canton crowd was Hollywood Joe Gerencser. Seventh was our long haul visitor from California's Buena Park Raceway, Tim Wood. Eighth place belonged to Yeti chassis's Jim Bandes. For ninth, Dan Halfhill put in his best king track showing yet. Making his first king track start, our youngest competitor Jeffrey Henes came home tenth by panels over our second youngest competitor, Haley Halfhill in eleventh. Group 10 was a real treat of a race with twenty entrants signed up to race the big 16Ds, with two ten-man round robins to run.
Will Custer set himself up as the man to beat with a scorching qualifying performance with a new track record at 4.516!
Custer would prove that his pace was no fluke and picked up his second win of the day. Cap Henry came back from his GT1 issues to race his way to a strong second. David Decoster used some monster horsepower to find third place. Justin Porter pulled off a fortunate fourth over Eric Kujo Paws Shirey's fifth. Bob Manzitti raced up from the B-main to claim sixth overall, followed by Alex Stoudinger in seventh. Eight belonged to a strong Jeff Middaugh. Jay Sabala also had a strong G10 day with a run to ninth. James Ellis Pace Jr. found a solid tenth and Canton's Ralph Middaugh came home eleventh. Jeff Henes was fast but a car that inhaled its body left him in twelfth. Hollywood Joe Gerencser ran thirteenth on the day over Danny Shirey who was making his first Group 10 start. Fifteenth belonged to Tom Rowell who out ran an improving Dan Halfhill's sixteenth. Nate Graham managed seventeenth despite major handling issues. GTP was once another huge field with 23 entries, running two eight-man and one seven-man main.
Cap Henry was blindingly quick as the Top Qualifier, setting a new track record and hunting to break the 4 second barrier with his laps! This was setting up what would become the duel of the day.
Throughout the A-main, Cap Henry and Will Custer, Eric Kujo Paws Shirey threw the lead back and forth, turning incredibly quick laps and building a tremendous gap to the field. Ultimately, breaking up a Custer sweep was Cap Henry with the win, followed by Willy in second and Eric in third. Bud Bartos earned a great fourth place and was the only other racer to crack 200 laps on the day. Elmo Vallance stayed in the fight for a very strong fifth. Jim Pace Jr. showed his GTP win last year was no fluke by running sixth in an aggressive field and being the best finisher out of the punishing B main. Seventh was the lightning quick Ralph Middaugh who also was the builder behind the second place car. Brother Jeff Middaugh then came in eighth by panels! Alex Stoudinger borrowed a car from Butters Engel to manage an excellent ninth. Jeff Henes had his strongest outing on the day in tenth. David Decoster wound up eleventh over Justin Porter in twelfth. Thirteenth and winning the C main was Javier Sabala with a great drive. Dan Halfhillcame up with fourteenth ahead of Bob Manzitti in fifteenth. Danny Shirey struggled with traffic to come home sixteenth. Nate Graham had major handling issues which kept him to seventeenth. Gil Pataky ran fast but withdrew, ending up eighteenth. Jeffrey Henes continues to learn the faster divisions and ran nineteenth. Joe Gerenscer had a difficult day as well in twentieth over Haley Halfhill in twenty-first, leaving Tim Wood and Butters Engel withdrawing with mechanical issues.

The Ohio Challenge Cup rolls on to the shortest track on the calendar, racing in November on Fastraxxx's infamous bullring, the '95 American Royal in Fremont.

Hope to see you there for Ohio's Stamped Steel Series!
