IMS president Doug Boles posted this photo to Twitter a day or two ago:

This is a drill core of the Speedway's paving. That red layer at the bottom is 108-year old bricks!

The supposition is that IMS is due for repaving and this is some testing that's being done.

Would make a cool platform for the Borg Warner trophy.

It would be cool to see it marked with the names of the winners at the surface level they used.

As I understand it, Eddie, they repave the track every 7-12 years.

So this core may not represent every paving layer going all the way back to 1909. Some of the earlier layers were removed prior to doing the repave in certain years.

As I understand it, Eddie, they repave the track every 7-12 years.

If the thin segments represent a resurface (maybe they're just prep for a resurface) it looks like there's 10 layers. That could be remains from all the resurfacing, since that represent 70-120 years.

In any event, that's really cool!

If they're doing soil borings, that sounds like more than just a "repaving". Maybe a little re-engineering going on?
