The former USSR and today's Russia have a long history of state sponsorship of athletics.  This seems to be a logical extension of that philosophy.  When I was in grammar school, 7th and 8th grade boys were required to take "shop" (and the girls consigned to "home ec").  Of course, in today's gender war circumstances, that would be unthinkable.  Even in my day on reaching high school, one had to choose between the academic track and the very well equipped "trade school"  where skills like machining and metal fabrication were taught.  I would have loved to learn some metal craft alongside of college prep courses - I asked and was refused.  As I look back on my high school days, my most valuable experience was a summer school course in drafting.  Throughout my scientific career, the ability to put ideas on paper in a universally understood format was invaluable.  I suppose that CAD makes this moot today but when I was a graduate student and a research scientist building or sourcing the devices that I needed, CAD was not an option.

My son took home economics and was a wiz at sewing. LOL I took shop in HS but in college you just didnt have the ability unless you wanted to take ten years to graduate..

Most of these programs are after school. Your kid can go twice a week and it cost 20 euros a month.
