Ron:

Your showing your age. ClutchFlites were a early 70's Pro Stock trans that didn't work that great. You're bringing up 1971 Don Carlton Motown Missile memories.

Hey I am a old guy, but was too young to know anything about Don Carlton in his time. LOL........ ClutchFlites were pretty "combat" ready by the late 70's early 80's. Well... at least for a pretty fast street car. Do they still even make those things???? LOL

Ron, I just pulled a 427 with a PowerGlide out of my '68 Nova. I could roast the tires all the way to 80 mph before it shifted into second, and when it shifted, it threw you into the back seat.

It's back on the first page, Nesta. Post #1, I think. Now sit down, we're busy correcting PdL on his OBVIOUS lack of American transmission knowledge! :laugh2:

Power Glides could take some abuse for sure.... never had one fail me.

PDL is probably lost when it comes to American Tranny's.

Anyone know what a "Rock Crusher" is?????

What prize do I get? I could sure use one of those motor rebuild coupons that everyone at R4 except me received.

Oh, and for Dokk, I may be wrong, but I believe the Facels used a TorqueFlite transmission, not a PowerGlide.

My mistake, I was thinking of one and wrote the other...

Nesta, I used to run a 500 Caddy in a '81 Regal in the NMCA. 536 hp at the flywheel after some help from Cadillac Motorsports Development (CMD). Pulled it out of a wrecked '70(?) Eldorado, sent it out to be gearheadized, and whipped alot of Fords with it.

Those sprayed, supercharged 5.0s never knew what hit them.

I don't know where you guys get a Slip and Slide Powerglide that worked with a 427. I smoked one easily (burned up) with a Chevy 6 cylinder. Now the NEW version of the Powerglide is a different story, but the Powerglide of the 60'2 and 70's was junk. I'd really like to see some documents on a less-than-331 cubic inch factory Hemi.Never saw one in 56 years.

I might not know the difference between a Mura and a Cukras motor, Gary, but I do loves me some early Hemis! That and early '60s Pontiacs are some of my favorite things.

I had a '71 Duster for a long while that I deepsixed the 318 and tossed in a 315 Dodge RedRam Hemi out of a '56 Dodge Royal. I freshened it up in '89 when I put it in the car, but never rebuilt it. Did a lot of drag racing with it and ran a best of 13.46. I pulled it out around '96 because the car was rotting away to nothing, but the engine was running strong.

Damn engine is STILL running in my buddy's '60 Dodge pick up.

Rocky, the only dealer-available 318 engine in 1957 was the Polysphere 318.

It had either one or two four barrel carbs. dual point distributer, and a nice lumpy solid-lifter cam. The Polysphere engine's heads are close to being a hemi in valve configuration and spark plug location, but didn't have the same valve geometry.

The real hemi's have two rocker shafts to operate the valves and a more central location for the spark plugs.

The "Poly" engines did offer a lot of the same breathing characteristics as the hemi, but were not as complex to manufacture, and did not put out as much horsepower.

There IS talk of a f/x 318 Hemi that was in a few '57 Sport Fury models, but the last one that surfaced went for over $350,000 at auction, so I hope you didn't have one of those.

I never knew there were that many Mopar variations. I lived right behind Clement Speed Shop and for many years got to see lots of stuff the average rodder (back then) didn't. My neighbor was also a Midget Racer builder/driver and always drove Chrysler 300s. Pontiacs? I have two right now, and when I was a kid my Dad owned a 1960 and 1966 Bonneville. I don't know what all this has to do with Facel Vegas but it sure is interesting stuff! :clapping:

Facel also produced a pretty and quite stylish 4-door sedan called "Excellence", with rear suicide doors and no roof pillars. The body lacked a bit of rigidity that caused problems opening and shutting the doors, but subsequent restorations feature an upgrade that ended this issue. Note the similarity with the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado:

Hi

There was also a 318 wedge, and I hope you dont mean that as the polysphere.

Anyway, dunno' what the books say now, but then, saw and owned and worked on the engine. In in a fury on in a belevedere. After I was through warming up the fury, the guy lost his licence being tagged by plane at 140.

But that is another story.
