I haven't had to buy any piano wire in several years, but I keep hearing there's a lot of un-straight wire on the market being sold. Has anyone tried to straighten any of this stuff so it's usable? If so, how? In the day, when piano wire was a nickel per foot, I might have been apt to just throw it out. Then I came across an RC site that said to clamp one end in a vice, the other end in a drill chuck, pull straight & rotate the drill several times/foot. It said to use 10-12 turns for the smaller sizes, less for the larger sizes. It seems obvious that anything larger than a couple MM won't stay chucked in a drill & not all drill chucks close down to a zero clearance.

.055 wire still seems to be the most inconsistent of the K&S line.   Occasionally I will get some .062 or .047 that would not be usable for main rails. If it's not straight after I tin it, I just put it to the side to use for bracing or hinges depending on the size of the wire.

Can't straighten it---Pitch it or use it for something OTHER than your main rails that require consistent flexing!! I don't buy K&S anymore because it's always seconds from the bigger manufacturer's.  I've used McMaster Carr and others for good piano wire.  Do a little search for suppliers in your area.

I found high quality music wire at Grainger-- all our popular sizes-- .055 .063 in 45' packages--3" sections

.047  .032 in 60' packs.  Pretty inexpensive when compared to slot shops K'S prices and better quality.

FWIW

Tim....thanks for that......I'll try Grainger. I just bought a package of .055 in 1' sections from McMC and it was the worst wire I've seen. K&S is way better. Nothing is as good seemingly as our old fave Small Parts but alas......that's gone forever.

I used to get wire from McMaster but after a while it started to come really bent. It’s been years ago. Haven’t revisited them since.

The bad .055 K & S I've encountered is bent every few inches.

That's about 4 bends per 12" length.

Trying to bend it straight would be like trying to teach a snake to fetch a stick :dash2: :D

That’s why I don’t use .055 lol.

Ace hardware by my house and Hobbylink on line. It’s K&S and it is pretty straight after you cut about 3 inches off each end.

Just bought some .055 K&S from a raceway. It is decent but I almost never use .055 for main rails, just short sections for hinge arms, braces or uprights and such. It doesn't have to be all that straight for those uses. No idea why the .055 would be worse than anything else but I agree that it seems to be that way.

Am going to need a fair bit of .039 and .047 soon so I'm going to try Grainger.

Yeah Jim  that "Small Parts" company was AWSOME!! I don't know where they got their wire but it was some of the best I"ve ever seen.  I"m still trying to find someone like that--- but all the real "wire" companies I try sell it only in enough quantity that ALL OF US would need to go in on an order!! Like $500 minimums!! :)

The best spring steel wire I have found is by the manufacturer Malin. I think McMaster Carr sold it at one time. Typically it is sold in 1 foot lengths and sold in qty. 100 packs.

All my bad .055 wire was in 12" lengths. It has dark striations on it, like a barberpole.

I emailed K & S and politely asked about it, the answer was, "it is straight when it leaves our factory".

No request for photos or to send it to them for inspection.

I bought a 36" length of K & S .055 from a different source recently and it was fine.
