My favorite of the Mabuchi cans is the Russkit "22"/"23" type with the small blind bushing, and I do them all the time.  They're light, strong and easily modified.  Of course, they don't have the gigantic brass rotating bushing carrier...but that's why I like them :)  Still, not having the carrier makes can-mounting a problem, so here I put the can in the mill and drilled two vertical holes, making it EZ for any scratchbuilder to mount the motor can-drive.  Then again, this motor can go end bell-drive also, because I pressed-up a stack and spaced it "dual shaft", so this one's a  "dealer's choice" and can go either way (*I know which way I'd do it ;) ), but life's all about having choices.  :D  The can also got a ball bearing.

This motor got my last NOS Tradeship FT16D end bell along with it's improved "Pent Roof" hardware.  Adding to all that, it got my last set of the Champion semi-can shims and a strong set of ceramics to match.  Just because I sometimes like to torture myself, I also honed the setup to be sure everything is groovy in there.

I wound the arm 55T/#29awg for a heapin' helpin' of vintage fun.  This one got signed instead of a sticker just because it seemed like the way to go.

Thanks Geary!  I could have gone a little hotter with this one, but I figure this wind is more like what might have found itself in one of these.  Besides, the end bells are ALWAYS the limiting factor with the Mabuchis.  Having the choice of going can-drive or end bell drive seems like a plus for that reason.

That is the meanest looking "22" I've ever seen.

I would even call it sinister.

A beauty from the "H" house as always.

I have two Russkit 22's left over from my first foray in Slots back in '66 to '67. I used to rewind them at 65 turns of #29. I may be interested in having you play with them. What would be the best bet for the brush hardware since as you know the 22's had the brushes running on the plastic of the endbell. I have a few "Classic builds I want to do with some hard body Lotus 40 and Chaparral II bodies by Tamiya. I also have a clear Lancer Porsche 904 that I would like to do.

Thanks a heap Joe.  "Sinister" works for me!  ;)

Well, the best bet for a vintage "has to be correct" application would be to come up with the later FT16D end bells with the heatsinks.  That turns your "22's" into "23's" instantly.  :)  If you don't have any or can't find any, then the end bells can be converted to use modern end bell hardware "hoods".  This will improve the function and allow the use of the larger modern "standard" brushes (FT36D size).  65 turns of #29 would work, but you can do the same number of turns of #30 wire, and it might be more appropriate.  The #30 wind will work really well with the stock magnets as to boot.

John, has anyone put their hand up for this one yet? If not I'd love to give it a home.

As will be the case with so many of Mr. H's builds!  Try to order one, then he'll have to tell everybody else it's gone!!!!
