Here's some photos from the 2017 Shinoda Reunion at Downriver Speedway in Michigan.

Good event with good people who enjoy cool looking slot cars just for the fun of it. Sure brought back a lot of memories and was good to meet some of the guys from Slotblog like Eliot, Gene/ZRI, Brad Blohm, and to see old friends like Rick Davis, Bob Appelle, Mike Nivetta to name a few.

Will post some more photos later.

Bob K.

Great day!  I'll add some info for a couple of the pictures:

The pictures with the two oldie moldie slot car boxes:

The box on the right is Jerry Mrlik's racing box, and on the left is Jeff Mrlik's racing box.  Jerry was a guy at the GM Tech Center who helped Jim Hall with several issues on the Chaparrals over the years.  He was also an avid slot car racer and traveled with Larry Shinoda, Dave Corben, and the Dyna-Rewind guys Bud Stordahl and Ted Lech, also all GM Tech Center guys.  You talk about old smell of oil of wintergreen, throw in some must and mildew and a pinch of stale-air and well, you could smell these from 20 feet away!  In Jerry's box in the tray on the lowest level there is a perimeter chassis.  What I was told by Jeff when I met him, and phone calls with Dave, is that they liked running multiple hour enduros.  This chassis was made in 1967/early 1968 and features a loop to keep the nose of the car from flexing down on the front wheels, a quick connect lead for faster motor changes, and brass strips connected to the brush tubes to wick away heat: elephant ears years before Mura elephant ears!  In Jeff's box were several old controllers with plugs common in the day, and if you look closely, all with Dyna-Rewind stickers!  Everything I got from Jeff is covered with Dyna-Rewind stickers!  Love it!!!

Several pictures down the guy with the flannel shirt:

Southeastern Michigan slot car legend Rick Davis.  I didn't get a chance to talk with him, but, the tall guy behind him...  I hate that I've already forgotten his name (memories going, I'm now getting old too), but he also raced with Jerry, and Dave, and talked about them picking him up when he was 15 and driving to Parma Ohio for a lengthy enduro.  He actually recognized Jerry's box!

Be there next near!

P.S.  Thanks JB at Downriver Speedway for hosting another fun time!  Support your local raceway!

Here's a picture of the endurance car Brad is talking about.

Remember that a lot of those 4-hour enduros were on Figure-8 tracks so a ton of laps were run and a lot of motors were needed. Man, I getting dizzy just writing about it.

Gene brought down a ton of bodies for sale and I think Gene took home a few awards also.

Great photos guys, was very happy to see this and know my car was in very good company.

Funny you should talk about that perimeter chassis: I picked one up on ebay in the early years, before anybody talked about these - and it was only when I met Gene on the forum that he explained what these were about: they were run with hardbody stock cars, lightened on the inside until you could almost see light shining through the body!

Heres a few shots of the boxes and cars of Jerry and Jeff Mrlik that Brad Blohm [on right] brought that he was showing Rob Voska. I believe these cars were 'perimeter' cars also, Brad can correct me if I'm wrong. Those boxes are well traveled as evident by all of the Parma race stickers on them where some of the biggest stock car races were held back in the day.

Yep, those are N.O.S. Dyna Rewinds. :man_in_love:

That's actually Brad on the right in that photo - great guy! Met him years ago in Chicago when we did an early ebay or other exchange in a deserted parking lot in downtown Chicago - good thing we didn't get busted!

Since then he's come to every one of our Bordo vintage races, and many more in Europe besides, with a few Le Mans 24 Hour races in between!

Hey Rob, organize something at Fremont and as long as I'm free that weekend I'll talk Gene, and or Jay, and or Dave, and or Nick, and or ... into a road trip.  Just keep the motors allowed in the 1968 and prior class and we'll have/make cars to play.  I like that cutoff as things started to REALLY ratchet up the performance after '68.  Dynas, early Champions, early Muras, Certus, to my knowledge were all at least in the same ballpark.  I will admit that I prefer scale cars over outright speed and crazy power is useless with scale-ish wheels and higher COG bodies/chassis, but organize something vintage and I'll make every attempt to play!  Other than that, have cars ready for the 2018 Shinoda/thingie meeting and I'll see you then.

Maybe the goop in the lid is solidified jelly of wintergreen!  I've no idea!  I'm afraid to touch it!!!

Some more photos.

Jay Elliot of Saint Clair Shores Michigan brought a 'table of cool' and it was great to see so many old cars from back in the day. Some Shinoda, some not. That's Jay standing proudly over his collection and doing some work on one of his fleet.

Will be posting more pictures of the individual cars later.

Before I post anymore photos I would like to say that I am in no way trying to squeeze into Eliot's spotlight. This great event was Eliot's idea and Eliot and his dad Paul run the show. I am just a messenger here and I asked Eliot for permission to post these photos and he gave me a "Hell Yeah" so thats why I'm sharing these photos with you.

Here are some more pictures from Jay Elliots collection.

Dave,

Your correct, my error. Super nice machines in that Ready to Run thread !

How about a Shinoda survivor ? According to Eliot this year he had 6 survivors in one place which is the largest assembly of original Shinoda's to date. I brought one of the 6 and here's the story behind it.

I walked into Hobby Haven Raceway in Elyria Ohio and the shop's owner, Matt Porter asked me what I was up to. I told him I was going to a Thingie reunion of sorts in Michigan and he said he had a Shinoda hanging on the wall attached to a piece of old track as a display. I said "your kidding me, right" ?  Well we went to the back of the shop and sure as you know what there was a Shinoda hanging on the wall and Matt asked me if I wanted to take it along with me, well you can image what I said. While Matt was unhooking the car from the track on the wall he lifted up the front of the body and I could see that familiar Dyna-Rewind sticker and about fell over. Talk about a chance encounter.

The story behind how Matt got the car is that it was given to Matt and his son Justin by a old time Elyria slot racer by the name of Bernie Posey who used to run at the original Slot Shop on Winkle Street that was run by the legendary Paul and Donna Hubbell. Bernie thought it would be cool for people to see what was run back in the early days and he gave the car to Matt and Justin for a time-warp type of display piece not really knowing the historical significance behind it.

Unfortunately I was too busy running around looking at all the cars and talking about the old days and this is the only photos I have of 1 of the original 6 Shinodas. Sorry .

Some track photos and a 'Detroit Slider'.

I added the ruler so you can see how much the car moved or 'slid' under the body. Note the rear tires in relation to the frame in the photos also. Original, not sure maybe someone will chime in with specifics.

Thanks Bob, really appreciate your posting all these photos!

How did the Slider do in the race? I've got one in project stage, and wondering if I should go ahead with it (period built, so not quite as clean as this one, pretty sloppy in fact, so not sure how effective it will be!).

Any race results yet guys?

Hi, Don ... I will have corrected race results sometime today.  I've forgotten how to post pictures here, but I will probably figure it out.  If not, I'll manually type them ... LOL.

The JW-built Detroit Slider finished 2nd Place in the A Main (faster heat) of the Period Correct class, behind Gene Adams' colorful Long Bus entry.  It qualified 3rd fastest in that class with a lap time of 6.748 sec.

Thanks Bob, really appreciate your posting all these photos!

Bob, Dad and I can't tell you how cool we thought it was for the Bernie Posey car to get to travel a bit to this event and we're glad it got that level of attention. Thank you for taking it along and showing off a great piece of slot car history!

Justin,

Thanks for allowing me to take the car, it was a honor. You guys don't want it back do you ? LOL !

Here is a few 'box' shots. Gotta love the screw on braid in those little parts compartments.

Here's a little more.

First Photo, CUC'S. You have to have Cuc's at a Thingie event.

Next probably the coolest slot box I ever seen.

Gene brought some molds.

Super neat wall poster Eliot raffled off.

I'll be the first to say it, "I hate that I missed this event"!  I know that there are many others out there feeling the same way.  This may be the solution to enjoying slots again for me and many others.  Elliot, you have re-opened the door!

Just a great event and great pictures.    I feel like there must be more interest in vintage slots up in the Michigan area than  anywhere else in the US.    If we can't be there at least we have these reports.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!  It's a fair amount of work, but absolutely worth it.  We are confirmed for 2018 already, the date is still being picked out, but the rules won't be changing much if at all from this year!  It's an absolute blast, and it's only going to get bigger and better in 2018!  I can't thank everyone enough for coming out, and making it such a great day!  Lastly, I still have posters for sale, so if you want one, let me know, the proceeds go to the track as always!

Thanks, that means a lot, and don't worry, 2018 is going to be a great year!  The more the merrier, and hopefully next year, we are able to have even more racing than we had this year!

Last of the photos.

Thanks again to Eliot, his father Paul, and the folks at Downriver Speedway.

Rick Davis wasn't the only celebrity in the house, Batman, Robin, and Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth were there also.

How about a sweet looking dragster.

Former raceway in Toledo.

Now if I can only get Gene to make some Astro V's....hint,hint,hint.

Twinkies...delicious

Dang it Bob, you should have picked up a pair of those Twinkies for the Posey car. They're only $1.79 a pair! The shop would have paid you back. :)

Where can I get my hands on some of those Twinkies?  I love the swirls, and un-drilled wheel!
