During the holidays, I spend a lot of time thinking about my ancestors and the so many nice things they did for me and my sibs.

Almost every time we planned a visit with my maternal grandfather, over the holidays or not, he wanted to know if we would like his sausage pinwheels for breakfast and the answer was always yes. So he would make them, at least a day ahead because they have to be frozen overnight. And he was the one who made them, not my grandmother even when she was still alive.

I think these were meant to be hors d'oeuvres for parties and the like, but with a bit of grape jelly or something similar smeared on the crusty bottoms, they're a heavenly breakfast. I know I could eat 20 or more any morning.

I'm actually making a batch of these tonight...

Sausage Pinwheels

Ingredients

1 lb. bulk sausage, at room temperature (we like hot best, but any flavor)

2 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt

2 Tbsp corn meal
5 Tbsp shortening (can use butter)

3/4 cup sweet (whole) milk
1 tsp sugar

Directions

1) Cut shortening into floor mixture.
2) Add milk and mix to form dough.
3) Divide dough into two parts.
4) Roll each piece of dough into a 5” x 10” rectangle.
5) Divide sausage into two parts and spread one part evenly over each rectangle.
6) Starting on the long side, roll each sausage-dough rectangle like a jelly roll, rolling tightly to eliminate any air pockets.
7) Wrap in wax paper, tightly twisting the ends.
8) Freeze overnight.
9) To prepare, remove from freezer to allow to soften slightly for easier slicing. Cut into 1/8-1/4" slices.
10) Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 14 mins. If using butter rather than shortening, cooking time will be a bit longer, as shortening is all fat and butter has roughly 15% water. Pinwheels are done when they have a golden-orange color and when the bottoms have browned moderately.

Damn it, Gregory! You're gonna make me fat!

Lordy, those sound tasty. I'm going to have my son make those, as he is a better preparer/cook than me.

There you go again with another one of your recipes. (Keep 'em coming!)

When I go to a restaurant, a lot of times I ask the waitress to leave a menu after we order. I just love to look at the pictures!!
