Retro Coupes on the Figure 8 – 1/2/18

 

Retro racing at MVH kicked off 2018 by running Retro Coupes on the Figure 8.  Seven cars went through tech to run the race in 4/4 format.

 

Retro Coupes in Tech:

 

Peter Lentros and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood were both fast and in a battle for the lead from the start of the race, ending the first half with 204 laps each. Dave Panich and Richard Payne were in the hunt for a podium finish as at the halfway point Dave had logged 202 laps to Richard’s 201. Dick Griffin started well, winning a heat on the outside lanes and claiming 5^th place at the half with 197 laps to 6^th place Rich Girvin’s 195 laps while Tom Smith closed out the field with 192 laps. 

 

The move to the inside lanes saw Woody’s car come into its own as he logged 9 more laps in the second half than the first. On the other hand, Peter struggled with handling in the second half and was only able to log 3 more laps after the move to the inside lanes making the race for the bottom step on the podium somewhat more interesting. In the end, even though Dave and Richard P each put 5 more laps up in the second half they were unable to catch Peter as Dave claimed 3^rd place with 409 laps to Richard P’s 407. 

 

Rich G had a strong second half, matching Woody’s plus-9 second half performance and passing Dick to take 5^th place with 399 laps to Dick’s 398.

 

Woody and Rich G were the only cars to break the 3.3 second barrier as Woody posted the fast lap of the night with a 3.234. Everyone else except Tom posted fastest laps within 1/100^th of a second!

Even though an outside lane, green seemed to be the preferred lane with 3 racers posting their best lap times on it.
