Formula 1 on the King – 1/9/18

The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series saw seven racers present their F-1 cars to tech this week for an evening of racing on the always-fast Gerding G-7 King.  All eight lanes were run in 4/4 format with four drivers racing and three working the turns.

Ricky Pratt popped a new motor in his car about 15 minutes before the start of the race and decided to run break-in gearing of 8:26 figuring he could gain back in the corners what he’d lose on the straights. However, even with the slightly lower gearing he quickly posted a 4.49 second lap on white and jumped out to an early lead.  Bobby Blanchette, Doug Uhlman and Rich Girvin were all giving chase with about evenly matched best-lap times in the 4.6s.

At the move to the inside lanes Ricky held the lead, logging 155 laps and up by 7 laps over Bobby. Two laps back Dave Panich was holding onto 3rd but Rich G was in striking distance, trailing him by less than two laps. Though 3rd fastest on the night, Doug was having some issues staying in the slot which put him in 5th, one lap off Rich G’s pace. In 6th and 7th positions Richard Payne and Dick Griffin trailed by 3 and 4 laps respectively.

Six of the seven racers posted their best-lap times in the first half of the race but you wouldn’t know it based on the final lap count. Ricky put up 4 fewer laps in the second half while Bobby logged 4 more, making it more of a race but not changing the order or loosening their grip on 1st and 2nd places. Third place was another story as Rich G posted his fastest time on blue and logged 3 additional second half laps to Dave’s 1 fewer, putting them at the same lap total and on the same track section when the checkered flag came out as Rich took the final podium step by inches over Dave. The remainder of the field finished in the same order as in the first half with Doug logging the same number of laps in both halves of the race, Richard P adding 3 laps in the second half and Dick falling 3 laps off his first-half pace.
