The premier race of any Retro event is Can Am so it was for this years Parma Checkpoint Cup. The SCRRA again went with the hand out JK Hawk Retro format that worked so well at last years Checkpoint and Summer Western Classic. (3) marked and numbered motors were available to each racer and a very robust field of 46 took their chances at landing a "Silver Bullett!"  Everyone had their own break in procedure.......

Man, Can-Am had some serious racing! 354 laps for Duran, with Alex and Sam just a lap or two behind. Lordy!

Looks like the hand-out motors went without issue's. Good for everybody involved. Mighty fast racing indeed.

Duran averaged 44.25 laps per lane.  Wow.  On paper, it looks like the greatest Checkpoint Cup A Main ever when you look at the lap totals for the podium winners.  Congratulations all!  Excellent report Bryan and really enjoyed all the pictures.   :good:

Wow, great turn out and a total vindication of the short shaft HR motor!  A lot of hard work putting this report together.  Great job Bryan!

a total vindication of the short shaft HR motor!

I missed when the short shaft HR was ever ostracized, except for the theory, a Hawk 7 arm, could be transplanted in one, from the FB Greek chorus of non-IRRA® and SCRRA racers.

I thought it was a great move to use them for the handouts, at the CP, and told Bryan, as such, in a PM.

Just for the reason you stated.  The perception was that an H7 arm could be slipped in.  So, yes they were ostracized.  As a result I'm sure there is an abundance in storage, since the "R" motors have (evidently) been all snapped up.  Regardless,  this was a very wise move and there will probably still be short shaft HR's  available for Western Classic too.

i believe that the original short shaft motors were not marked to distinguish them from Hawk 7's. These short shaft motors are marked 7R so there is no way to confuse them with the Hawk 7's.

They were always clearly lasered marked.

The issue of cheating was based on racers putting Hawk 7 arms in 7R cans without detection (somehow? not disturbing the plating)

Since there wasn't a shortage of long shaft motors available, the IRRA® decided it made more sense to ban them.

My personal opinion, if someone put a Hawk 7 arm in one, it would be very obvious and the racer would get caught as a cheater.

The few times racers try to slip in Hawk 7 in my Wednesday night, no tech, GTP races, they are caught 1 -2 heats in the race, by me.
