Come join us March 25 for a different approach to SoCal Retro racing.
We will be gathering at BPR and running Can-Am and F1 with a bit of a change to the normal format. We will be running Pro Slot 4002FK motors supplied by the host.
If you have any questions please contact Jason Holmes or Jim Lange and we hope to see you there.

Sounds like a good test of these motors! It will be interesting to see what everyone thinks. I hope to be there as well.

What exactly does "all work will be done on motor pinion and play" mean? It's already been done for you? No need to swap out motor brushes and springs if desired?

Should be two tenths faster than RH motors based on how FK and RH compare in the GrF.
Gear ratio will be the critical factor... better look at what I got on my FK and RH GrF's
Maybe .007" spoiler..., more rake on Ti22 mounting..., more lead...hmm???????????????

Yep Tim, you put on the pinion and put the motor in the Car.
I'm doing all the work on the motor hoods, broke in ready to run.

Jason, this will be on the King? If so, looks like I'll be running with you "speedsters" on the big one finally. 'Bout time, I suppose.
Mike Low, still have a car I can try?

Mike
Don't go by GRP Fs that only work because you can keep them spun up. I'm going to do some testing tomorrow and will pass on the info.

Ron H says a tenth faster if were lucky because of low power.

Excellent! Looks like I volunteered myself for the King finally. This will be a bit calmer than trying my luck at the Checkpoint.
Thanks Mike.

Jason,
these motor have overlap, because of small comm, are you going to cutdown the brush so we will not short out the comm and fry it.

Mike,
I have been talking to Mike S and Ron H and with what I have done racing these motors and never have a push pull problem I'm not going to cut down the brushes. Have only seen the problem on Hard bodies. Heavy Cars and with really bad gear meshes.
And the race date and time is already set with the track. Did that 1st thing before I ordered the motors.

It will be very interesting to see how this event goes.
Proud to drive an American car, from an American manufacturer, assembled by American workers.
I own a car from each of the big three: I have a Ford, a Mercury, and a Lincoln.

The gears might also be an issue, but not because the mesh is bad/poorly adjusted, but because 48P gears, inline, and sometimes, not aligned, are inherently, not as smooth.
That said, Dale Lipe, fried his motor, in a 64P anglewinder car, this past Wednesday night, getting ready for the 4" Stocker race, this Sunday.
I'm guessing his hood's were severely misaligned.
It needed constant pushing to get it moving.
What's interesting is that on the flat track, on 13.1V, with about 8, 14 guage taps, the motor won't fry.
But on the King, with 12.2V, or 13.5V, with 20, 10 gauge taps, it will pop, if you stay on the controller.

because of the neo magnets, there is a high amp draw at 0 rpm, up to 40amps (I've have popped 40 amp fuses on my controller).
so, if the arm won't kick over right away and there is a short in the comm...
but, I'm willing to fry a few of your motors (Jason) for the h*ll of it

I've had pretty good luck with my PS4002FK's. I do try and get the brush hoods lined up, make sure the brushes don't "hang", and fully seat in the brushes. That having been said, I HAVE had a very few "no go's" when the power comes back on... but I could count those incidents on one hand over the course of thousands and thousands of laps over several years. Also, for what it's worth, the last PS4002FK I bought was absolutely spot on right out of the bag. I took it out of the bag, put a drop of oil on each bushing and began breaking in the motor. After maybe 30 minutes, I checked the brushes... wear was perfectly centered. I continued the break-in and checked a couple more times... perfect. I know that doesn't happen often but I wanted to brag that I got "the one". LOL
Remember, two wrongs don't make a right... but three lefts do! Only you're a block over and a block behind.

They should be about a tenth faster on average. And you will have to adjust to the brakes, as they have some. Good racing and have fun.

I see a lot of these motors soldered in. That preferable to screws?

Ron H's series runs speck 8 tooth pinions on the FK's. My local track runs low power 13.3 volts, kinda like you guys, and we run 9 tooth pinions with good results. Good luck and have fun.

In a side-loaded crash, the cans tend to bend to the side whether screwed in or soldered in. It can be straightened back out but it is, then, prone to bending with less load the next time.
The program in Dallas (joined them a couple of times) have really made this motor work for them with a very faithful monthly following. The track sold me a motor and broke it in for my first race and it was very good!
The cars that do not start after a track call (in Dallas and at Downriver Speedway who also run their successful weekly Retro program with these motors) can be a problem.
At the second race I attended in Dallas, the calls for "push, push, push" after the power went on were so prevalent that one of the drivers in my heat said, "Man, it sounds like a maternity ward in here!" I fell to my knees laughing and almost couldn't get it together to continue the heat!
As a flame retardant, none of this is meant in any way to bash the motor - I think they are great and so do at least these two regular and successful Retro programs. These are just observations consistent with both programs using this motor and may be areas for improvement. If these motors bring the kind of racers I saw in Dallas and Downriver to the track, it is a great thing. Shontelle (in Dallas) was very fair and even handed in insisting that I run the PS motor and not run my cadre of RH motors saying that the rules are the same even for visitors, even conceding that the RH might be an advantage on their flat track (they did run pretty well there).
Like Raisin, I am looking forward to seeing how this race goes.
Keep it in the slot,
AJ

They allow gluing in the endbell bushing, soldering in the can bushing, changing the brushes and springs, but not trimming the brushes.
You can cut one edge, or two, it does not advance the timing.

See you Guys Sunday. Hope to have FUN

On the motors that were used in practice, no problems were had. Cars ran 3.9's with no fall off for over 40 laps. Start gearing 10/28. Bill V tried 9/26-27 and ran the same times. Your Choice on Pinoin 9 or 10 but no bigger. Yes, you can run smaller if you wish.
