I don't know what's happening with my photos being hosted by Photobucket. I've paid them their new exorbitant fees for service. Now half of my photos won't show up properly. Random photos are gone.

I guess all my threads are taking a pictorial dump...

Rick,

Of course, the links to your pics here at Slotblog haven't been changed.

This is something you need to take up with Photobucket, especially if you've paid their usurious fee for third-party links.

I finally found an email address to Photobucket support. I think they actually fixed the problem. :shok: :clapping:

I think when I start a new thread here I will use Slotblog's photo method. :victory:

Some good news, Rick, a thread of yours that had some non-opening photos yesterday, now has all the photos being shown. So I would guess whatever Photobucket did, it worked.

Thanks, Bill. Their site works faster for me now too.

I would be prepared for PB to go belly up and all photos lost. I've been through this with about six photo sites the last 15 years or so. I've got photos on two other sites now. I wish they were freely accessable to anyone poking around, but I think they are secure at Google photos.

Photobucket offering its services for $499? A sterling example of free enterprise.

I think their price for third-party links is $399, Todd, but that's still ridiculous considering the cost of storage these days.

$399 it is. Am now using Imgur, a free service. Wouldn't be too surprised when it notices all the new PB refugees, it'll morph into a fee pay site.

I opted for their $59.99 per year plan when their policy change threats first appeared. I figured I'd spring $5 per month to not loose all my build threads. I have a feeling if anybody wants to see them they better check them out now while they're still up.

I'm going to use Slotblog's photo hosting for future threads.

Hi Rick,

I'm going to use Slotblog's photo hosting for future threads.

Yeah, when PB first went to a fee and my pictures all suddenly disappeared with an email demanding "ransom" ;) , I looked around for another free hosting site and realized it was a crapshoot if any of them went to a paid service and/or just folded.  I originally thought I was saving Slotblog costs for bandwidth, and then Greg told me he actually preferred the photos be hosted here... who knew? Anyway, it kind of makes things a little simpler to just upload them here, rather than uploading them somewhere else and then linking to them.

You gotta wonder what PB was/is thinking because, the fee is off-the-hook exorbitant. Seems like an act of desperation to be profitable... and one that might actually wind up killing them.

I've actually posted that opinion more than once, but with nearly half-a-million posts here, you are forgiven for not seeing it.

I just hate for photos shown here that are hosted elsewhere to go away when the links become dead for whatever reason.

... and I'm going to start compressing them, too. I think about 70% should be a good round number, Greg. Waddya think?  :)

70% is the figure I use.

Just to show how much difference a decent amount of JPG compression makes, here's a screenshot of the save dialog box from one of John's pics I adjusted because it was a litle dark.

70% JPG compression reduced the filesize by over 83%, from 249.4 KB to 41.8 KB. And my eyes can't see any difference in how the image displays.

I believe Photobucket is automatically reducing my file size for pictures. My pictures start out at between 600 KB and 900 KB.

I have a "resize" option in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Here's an experiment for this semi-illiterate computer user:

An 894 KB picture:

RAM Maverick (29) - Copy.JPG

And resized to "800 dpi" 128 KB:

RAM Maverick (29) - Copy (800x600).jpg
