Retro Stock Cars on the Figure 8 – 4/10/18

It has been over 11 months since Retro Stock Cars have taken on the Figure 8 in the weekly MVH Tuesday night retro series. Back from his world travels, Woody Hazelwood joined the small group of five regulars to round out the field at six racers. The race was run in the 4/4 format with 3 racers on at any given time allowing two racers to marshal and one to run the race.

Cars in Tech:

There was some excitement late in practice as Woody and Dave Panich both managed to take strong hits just prior to the start of the race. During tech Richard Payne pointed out Woody’s guide was bent about 20 degrees south of horizontal and he suggested it might run better if this were corrected. Woody agreed and took care of the problem. Dave’s car showed no apparent damage but something was off as the handling was somewhat degraded and he struggled to stay in the slot early in the race.

Woody capitalized on Dave’s handling problems and pulled out to an early lead. At the move to the inside lanes, Woody was in the lead with 188 laps as Dave held 2nd with 186. Richard P was in 3rd, trailing by two laps with Rich Girvin three more laps behind him with 181.  Dan Savage was able to log 177 laps while Dick Griffin closed out the field with a 170 lap mid-race total.

As the race progressed the drivers settled in and there were several quiet heats with very few de-slots or track calls. Woody and Dave were logging equal lap totals for much of the 2nd half until Woody got to the black lane and had some problems with the right-hander after the bridge and perhaps someone (who will remain unnamed) in an adjacent lane, giving Dave a chance to close the gap. When the dust settled, Dave had managed to squeak by Woody to take the win by 3 sections (however, after one of his sit-outs, Woody’s car was logged to go in on Section 5 but Woody’s recollection was it was Section 8…which would make the race too close to call and a virtual tie!). In either scenario, 3 sections or a tie is pretty close competition for a 381-lap race.

Except for Richard P, the remainder of the field all managed to log more laps in the second half than in the first but Richard P’s lead over Rich G held up, allowing him to take the bottom podium step by a four-lap margin.

Woody posted the fastest best-lap time of the race while Richard P was able to finish 3rd with the 5th fastest time, proving once again that consistency beats speed (in most cases).
