The Classic Serpent is a beautiful slot car and I always wanted to own one. So I would buy (not so mint) cars with a mind to fix and restore. I guess I like the challenge of getting broken and beat parts and making them live again. I did not take enough pics of the "before" but the chassis were ugly and they sat in a box for over ten years maybe more. One day it was just time to see if I could make just one good one.

Once I had all the parts laid out and cleaned them, it actually seemed possible to do two.

The chassis were bent and crusty with extra solder from another life. Of course the body mount was always broken so I made a template in the flat, then transferred it onto .040" brass. Brass being much stronger than the .040" aluminum. I did make one in aluminum and painted it to match the blue anodizing. When it came time to mount one of the bodies it was so warped and did not look good. I came up with a plan to put side panel stiffeners along side the stock mount. They are made from thin brass angle and can be removed. They do hold the body nice and straight. Too bad Classic did not fix these issues with an H shaped body mount. A little more front wheel clearance would have been nice too, not much wriggle room in that front wheel well.

I still have questions on which are the correct spinners?

What were the correct rear wheels and tire colors?

Anybody know how to mix that green so I can fix the tire rub marks?

Those look very nice Martin; pretty sure the spinners you show are the right ones... I did a thread on my Serpent project awhile ago: try a search for Classic Serpent, since I added a magazine cover from the period.

Tire color is a very fuzzy question!

Don, take a closer look at the spinners. they are not the same. The rears have an thicker tang and an offset. The fronts have a skinny tang. Not sure which is correct ?

This is what I have for tires, and a better shot of the side panel outriggers.

You are probably correct on the spinners. I could only find 2 of the fat tang spinners in my parts bin. So I wonder what the skinny tang fits ?

I looked all over for a close up pic for confirmation, really hard to see. Thanks for the help.

I think I checked that at the time Martin, maybe in the Museum and other photos... I had always wondered what these spinners were for, since they were so... fat!

I'll see if I have any of the fat ones left for you...

I've been working on a Serpent resto  also, what's the correct drop-arm, brass or grey?  Nice job, I only hope mine turns out as nice!

Thanks Don, happy to trade for spinners?

John, both drop arms are anodized aluminum, gold and blue/grey. I have seen both colors used with the green/purple body. Probably because of its rarity I have only seen a gold drop arm with the gold/black body.

Feel free to post pics of your Serpent project, I learned a lot on this restoration and I am happy to help with yours.

Thanks Miko. I just clean and fix them. What you do is ground up design. Great stuff.

Thanks Martin. I think you do a great job on the restoration, they are very clean and look better than new.

I just now noticed in your pictures that one of the Serpents has two rear wheels on each side?

Miko, This is a set of stock Classic wheels that came with one of the cars. What you are seeing is a groove where the body rubbed I assume. I think what happened is the body curled in, and someone just keep running the car.       It does look like dual wheels, but it is not.   I do like the idea of dual wheels though. hmmmm
