I have the opportunity to build a group of these tire gauges, and I am trying to get an idea of how many people would be interested in them. They work on all tires up to 1" in diameter and down to HO tires. No more fumbling with your calipers to check the size of your tires; now get an accurate diameter to within .0001" for exact matching of tires.

I am looking for them to be done around August or September, depending on the delivery of materials. The price point will be around $125.95, plus shipping costs. Normal track discount will be available to brick and mortar hobby shops for those that would like to stock them.

Jeff,

Wondering if the durometer of the tire rubber would not have an impact on the accuracy of the reading at times?

Should not due to 1" x 1" plate attached to the bottom of the indicator along with a modification within the indicator itself.

I did notice that and admit that comparing the diameters of tires with the same rubber compound would likely be consistent.

I have tested this on numerous compounds of tire and have found no flexing on dimensions. It only adds 17 to 18 grams of pressure to the tire when measuring, which is less than the tire gets from being on the chassis itself.

The gauge will only read half thou... not .0001". Plenty good enough... Good idea!

Nice idea – but I think I'll get by with my Harbor Freight $6.99 digital calipers!! :)

Nice idea but I'd actually prefer an analog (non-digital) gauge.  It seems every time I go to use a digital unit the battery is always dead, especially so when it's really important.  BTW...Resolution to .001" is plenty accurate enough for tires.

Like Jay said nice idea but I will stick with the dial calipers I have had for 40 years without a battery.

Could someone please explain how this does work? Can't imagine it with the one picture.

Hi Benno:

You first turn on the gauge and set to zero.  Then you pull up on the small knurled knob on top to raise the shaft that has the small 1" x 1" plate attached.  Then you place the tire to be measured under the small raised plate and slowly release the knob.  This allows the small plate to rest on top of the tire and thus the gauge will read the diameter of the tire.

Got my gauge today! Works amazing. Much easier than calipers. I can measure tires much faster and more acurate than with calipers. Great idea Jeff.
