Seven slot heads showed up to race Sports Car and Trans-Am at STR on 5/21/18. Track conditions were excellent for both classes.
  • In Sports Car, it was James, Rich and Mark Colby for first through third respectively
  • In a very closely contested Trans-Am race it was Rich, James and Bob for first through third respectively.
Sports Car

It was clear early on that James, running a Ford GT, was the guy to beat. He won the first heat by nearly a half lap over the nearest competitor and was the only driver to run under a five second lap (4.944). Rinse and repeat for the second heat as James increased his lead to about a lap over the nearest competitor. In the end, James won easily finishing with 91.3 laps.

Meanwhile, Rich, Mark Colby and Bob fought for second and third place. Rich was first of the group in barn with 89.5 laps. Going into the final heat Mark and Bob had both completed 66+ laps and were only a few sections apart. Both had a shot, albeit small, to overtake Rich. Clearly, Bob was pushing the pace very hard and as a result had a few offs. Mark, on the other hand ran a very clean heat and that made all the difference. Neither was able to overtake second place Rich. Mark finished third with 88.8 laps and Bob was fourth with 88.1 laps.

Editors note: Bob gave the guys a break by selecting his Shelby Series One rather than his Ferrari Modena or Ferrari F50. Either Ferrari would have been a far better choice. The Series One is quite narrow and has a short wheelbase making it much more difficult to drive than either Ferrari.

Trans-Am

The Trans-Am race was a very close contest between, Rich, James and Bob. Again, Bob gave the group a break by running his Dodge Challenger rather than his Firebird Trans-Am. Again, James was the quickest, running a fast lap of 5.022 seconds. However, James Firebird seemed a bit tight and along with some hard driving resulted in a few offs.

James was the first of the top three to finish his rotation with 88.6 laps. So, it all came down to the final heat. Rich rotated to white having completed nearly 66.5 laps. Bob rotated to red having completed 65+ laps. Both had a shot at overtaking James. Bob ran a fine heat finishing with 88.2 laps but it was not enough to overtake James. Rich ran a clean heat and was able to finish about six inches ahead of James. So it was Rich, James and Bob for first through third respectively.

Meanwhile, the battle raged for fourth place. Mark entered the final heat several sections ahead of Ron. From the outset of that heat, Ron began to close. With only a few laps left, Ron passed Mark but then Mark stepped it up a notch. In the end Ron edged out Mark by less than an inch.
