My good buddy and fellow slot car addict Gene Adams and I got together for breakfast about a week ago so I could deliver him another slot car box for his collection. When we got to the restaurant I discovered he had some gifts for me too!
Gene has got to be one of the coolest guys I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and his knowledge of vintage slot car building and common sense about life in general is about as good as it gets.
We meet in the parking lot and I give Gene his box and he hands me a cardboard box and says “I got some gifts for you”. What was inside the box you ask? Same thing I asked, and it was like Christmas morning cause I was so excited to see what he had for me!
Judging by the size of the box, I figured it would be a new body he is working on, and it was, but there was also so much more in the box!
Gene and I have been brainstorming on a couple of builds for this coming year’s Shinoda race at Downriver Speedway. We’ve been talking about building a few cars using 26D and 36D motors and we have been hunting for 36D comms and other various motor parts.
I open the box up and the first thing I find is the first pull of his newest body, a super sweet Banshee (sp?). This body is just flat out perfect! Gene does such a great job on carving body blanks and making molds. Then I dig a little deeper in the box and there is a hand wound 26D arm. Dig a little further and there is a hand built 36D motor. Dig yet further in the box and he has built a complete car! Awesome orange Manta Ray built on and old style JK stamped steel chassis. The car has another hand built motor in it and a cool set of sea green rear tires. Gene tells me this body is what he thinks a modern version of the Manta Ray body would look like.
I could not stop smiling! Thanks Gene!! You da man!
I told Gene I was going to post some pictures of the gifts and a couple of videos of his car going around my track. So, here they are. Hope you all enjoy viewing them and thanks again Gene for the gifts and friendship!
