Can-Am on the King – 7/31/18

It was back to the Gerding G-7 King this week to race retro Can-Am. Turnout was acceptable for a warm summer’s night with seven racers heading to tech. Racing was in the 4/4 format.

7 Can-Am Cars on the Tech Table:

Bob “Woody” Hazelwood was back from his world travels to join the Tuesday night regulars and proved to be quite competitive. By the halfway point of the race he was trailing a slightly slower Dave Panich by just one lap and might have been leading had he not been “Savaged” multiple times. Five laps behind Woody, Ernie LaChance found himself comfortably in 3rd place with 147 laps. The mid-pack racing was also close as Rich Girvin held a 2-lap lead on Dan Savage but trailed Ernie by 6. Another two laps back Richard Payne was giving chase but consistent driving couldn’t make up for his lack of horsepower while Dick Griffin trailed by 5 laps to close out the field.

In the second half Dave was his own worst enemy as a couple of poorly timed passes resulted in some spectacular extra-track activities which ultimately cost him the win. Woody was able to add two laps to his first half total to cruise past Dave and take the win by two. Ernie drove a consistent second half to claim the final podium position.

Dan outshined the field in the second half, adding 5 laps to his first half total and easily outdistancing and passing Rich G to claim 4th place as Richard P pulled away from Dick G to solidify his hold on 6th

Woody posted the fastest lap of the evening with Dave running 2nd. Dan was 3rd faster by a 1/10th over Ernie but was unable to overcome his first half struggles.

A motor is only as fast as the chassis it's in.
