I've been running a set of Alpha Piranha .760" 3/32" Big Full Hub tires (AL5218) and have had great results with them.  This was my first set of Piranha tires.  I've got 5 races and probably an equivalent number of practice laps on them and they've worn down to about .695.

Somewhat reluctant to replace my lucky tires, I ordered another pair of the same model.  The rubber on the new set, however, looks very different and doesn't perform nearly as well.

The new set has visible pores whereas the worn set looks much smoother and feels stickier.

Do the new tires just need to be "worn in" or did I somehow manage to get two different types of rubber?

Old tire on the left, new one on the right.

Yes.  They're identical.

Looks like a new batch of rubber.

Very common occurence.

That's why when the serious racer finds a tire he likes, he buys multiple pairs if he is convinced they are from the same batch.

Looks to me like you got Piranha Primo rubber.
If you like that fine pore stuff, buy some donuts and save some $$

The only place I can find Primo rubber on their site is the shop where they sell it as donuts.  It's not even mentioned in their 2018 catalog.  No actual bottled pre-made tires with the primo rubber.

The two compounds seem different enough that it would seem silly to sell them both under the same model number.

Yeah will be an error

But that looks like to me the sort of rubber you had

The new one looks like what I would expect from standard Piranhas

If you dont want to work with donuts, then I suggest you try JK’s premium ready made tyres, I think they are JK8703PP

As a side note, I'm curious with the diameter @ .695, are you still OK on the rear clearance?

Check with JK first but I don't think that 8703PP is the number you want to order for premium JS's

Barely, to the point where I'd probably start dragging during the next race.  That's why I need a new set.

That 3rd "P" notates the premium rubber.

Beware they are .820" diameter.
