Six-Hour Enduro Race

October 6, 2018

Track open 8 AM to 10 AM for practice, race starts at 10:30 AM.
15 minutes heats, 2-minute lane changes. We will cycle through the lanes three times. During the 2-minute lane changes, the teams can only:
- oil the car.
- move the car to the next lane.
- change the lane sticker.

- All work on the cars must be performed under green flag conditions. If a car is being worked on in the pits when a yellow is called, work on the car   can still progress.

Three classes:
First 2 hours: NASCAR - JK Hawk Retro short shaft motor.
Second 2 hours LMP/GT1 - JK Hawk Retro short shaft motor.
Third 2 hours GTP - Mid-America Phoenix motor.

Body:
Any JK, RTR, Parma, Mid-America, Red Fox, or O/S.

Chassis:
Any flexi chassis.

Motors:
Hand-out motors will be used: two JK Hawk Retro and one Mid-America Phoenix.

Spec Tires:
Three sets of JK Premium small hubs.

Spec Gear Ratio:
NASCAR and LMP/GT1: 12/36
GTP: 12/37

If any team smokes a motor they can purchase one motor from the raceway.

- Axle ball bearings are allowed on all classes.
- The teams are allowed to change the side pans during the race.

- Eight teams: 3 or 4 drivers per team, each driver has to race at least 2 lanes of each class.

Race Fee:
$100, which includes the cost of three hand-out motors and three sets of spec tires.

if you want to participate, sign up here leaving your name or contact me at (407) 719-7885. If I have any updates I will be posting them here.

Thank you,

Marcus

Looks like a lot of fun.

I'll definitely be a driver for this race.
Test, test, test and go test some more.

Tire strategy might turn out to be a big factor.

There is no crossover on P-1's Hillclimb so the RH tire wears about twice as fast as the LH.

I race JK Premiums at P-1 and from my experience, the RH tire typically wears down by at least .010" diameter (.005" chassis/gear clearance) during a 16-minute race (eight 2-minute heats).

Also, the RH tire typically becomes more coned (and what I call ski-jump shaped) than the LH.

During the six-hour enduro, if you run 30 minutes then rotate the tires, I think the handling (and lap times) will be noticeably affected for awhile.

The tires will certainly wear the fastest when running the GTP class with the Phoenix motor.

You'll probably need to have superglue ready to glue the tires back to the hub when the original glue starts to let go at the outer edge of the hub (not unusual).

Does each team need to setup three cars, or is there a time to switch motors?

Sounds like fun.

Also IMO If it's a true Enduro it should just be just one car. To really make it interesting it would be cool to make the teams use all three of the motors; that is, a different one in each class. I think this would help to even out the field motor-wise as it would be unlikely that one team would get three great motors.

Two cars, one for NASCAR and LMP/GT1 that will use the JK Hawk Retro motor and another for the GTP that will use the Phoenix motor.

I'll set up my NASCAR/LMP with 0.770" tires and my GTP with 0.750". I think this way the tires will last.

Jay, I do not know if you ever had the chance to solder a Phoenix motor on the chassis. The magnets are very strong and to find a good gear mesh usually takes a lot of time.

I don't have any Phoenix motors but as far as getting the proper gear mesh when soldering one into a chassis, maybe the old "cash register paper between the gears" method would make it quick and easy.

I'm inclined to agree with Jay regarding running only one center section for all three classes, especially since everyone will probably want to run ball bearings.  That way only one chassis needs to be converted from bushings.

In fact, my preference would be to spec the chassis as:
--- One Mossetti Striker center to be used for all three classes
--- Allow 5 minutes to change to the Phoenix motor
--- No aluminum pans

I haven't talked to Marcus about what I posted above but just wanted to put it out there in case anyone had any opinions pro or con.

I'll also mention the following for the same reason:

Maybe instead of converting one or more flexi chassis from bushings to ball bearings, maybe it would be better to stay with bushings but just stop the races every five minutes only long enough for each team to put a drop of oil on the axle bushings.

Will racers be signing up as complete teams, or will this be similar to the retro enduro where racers are assigned to a team?

Last night I talked to Marcus about the enduro.  Just to clarify somewhat regarding his original post:

Each team will enter two cars.
One will be your NASCAR/LMP and the other will be your GTP.
Both cars will be teched before racing begins.  The GTP cars will remain impounded.
At the end of the eighth heat (last NASCAR heat) there will be the usual lane change (only oil and sticker).
When the ninth heat begins, a team member takes their car to the pits and changes to the LMP body.

All work is to be done in the pit area, not trackside.

Chassis/gear clearance must start out at .062 minimum, and will periodically be checked with a .047 tool.

Regarding the makeup of the teams, I assume he will give us an official reply in this thread when he gets a chance but last night when I asked him about it, he seems to be leaning towards letting drivers make up their own teams.

I know it made sense for Marcus to assume I would be a driver in the enduro, but today at the wing car races I let him know that I only want to help with putting on the race rather than driving in it.

During the race day I can be race director and also create backups of the race database after every heat.  I have my laptop configured to run the SlotTrak software in case of a problem with the P-1 PC.

I told Marcus that over the next couple of weeks, I thought it might be a good idea for me to do some testing regarding how fast the tires will wear during the enduro, and he said that would be OK.  I'll post what I find out.

Tire wear test results:

I only tested Marcus's GTP car (no NASCAR or LMP).  It was a Defender chassis with the heavy steel pans and a Renegade body.

The RH tire wore at a rate of .015" in 15 minutes.

For the RH tire in NASCAR I would expect .008" to .010" per 15 minutes and LMP I would expect .010 to.012" per 15 minutes.

The LH tire wears about half as fast as the RH.

Regarding the upcoming 6-hour enduro, I've attached a drivers/heats form so the teams can give some thought to who will be driving which heats.  If you can get this out ot the way ahead of time, it will be one less thing to deal with on race morning.

As the race progresses, teams can change their decisions as to which members drive which heats as long as each member drives at least two heats in each of the three car classes.

At last count that I'm aware of, there are five teams currently assembled under the captains Brian Ambrose, Matt Boman, Terry Tawney, Bill Bornman and Marcus Ramos.  There's still room for three more teams.
