Was told by a local racer to rebrush and respring the pro slot motor( gold dust and champion red springs) then align the brush hoods . How long do you break these in before you see the motor peak?

I break 'em in until the brushes are fully seated.

Another question, does replacing the brushes and springs make a significant improvement in performance?

Radius the brushes before you install them. Break in should be 10 to 15 minutes at 3 volts.

You might want to try the G7 brushes.  They are much harder, last longer and probably produce less friction loss.  Always radius any brush you decide to use, it reduces break in time.

The gold dust brush is cupped, do you still need to radius them or will they wear themselves to match the comm after a bit of use?

Radius them using a .170 diameter tool.
