Lighter fluid goes back into the 1960's as the most often used tire cleaner then wiped with a shop towel. A mixture of lighter fluid and tranny fluid was also good for cleaning braid.

Tire Cleaner
Get in the car, go to Walmart. In the chemicals section where the home cleaning supplies are look for Top Job Basic Multi-Purpose Cleaner Degreaser works like magic! Dirt cheap too $1.00 a 20 FL OZ spray bottle. Spray a little on the tires and work it into the tires with a soft thin cloth. Will make tires like new.
Shhhh....don't tell anyone ok?

If you're going to use lighter fluid regularly, I'd keep a little tire conditioner on-hand for occasional softening of the rubber. Just a thought.

I've seen tire "conditioners" sold at slot shops. Unless I'm mistaken, I think Tiger's Milk is one. Also, many guys use something as simple as sunscreen or certain types of hand lotion with lanolin.

Stupid question, but why not just get softer tires in the first place?

Oh! Ok that makes sense! I kept reading how people were saying it makes the tires softer etc and this and that. I was like just get softer tires then! LOL. Thanks for the clarification.

That would be correct. Also, I've stopped using lighter fluid altogether for cleaning tires, as the lotion works very well as a cleaner, too. I save the lighter fluid for other things --- such as sacrificing old bodies after losing a race.

P.S.
Replace your tires back to the tube after the race.
