Coupes on the Figure 8 – 10/9/18
The MVH Tuesday night retro-racing series featured coupes on the blue Figure 8 this week. A small field of just six racers ran in 3/3 format.
Ray Lee and Bob “Woody” Hazelwood had the speed and jumped out to an early lead. Tom Smith was driving a “Dominator Fang” loner from Peter Lentros and at the midpoint of the race was holding down 3rd place with 200 laps, one lap ahead of Richard Payne but trailing Woody by 9 laps and race leader Ray by 10. Rich Girvin and Wayne Secore finished out the field in 5th and 6th with 192 and 165 laps respectively
The move to the inside lanes saw the backmarkers pour it on as Wayne added 8 laps to his mid-race total and Rich G added 4, but neither was able to move up in the finishing order. Meanwhile, Woody improved his first half total by 3 laps and managed to squeeze past Ray to take the win by just 9 track sections while Richard P got around Tom to claim the bottom step on the podium by a 2-plus lap margin.
Ray took fast-lap honors for the evening with a 3.288 on black with Woody just 1/1000th behind him with a 2.289, also on black. Tom had the only other car in the 3.2s, posting a 3.296 on orange.
