Coupes on the Figure 8 – 11/6/18

Coupes were featured on the blue Figure 8 this week at MVH’s Tuesday night retro-race. A field of nine racers ran in all eight lanes in 4/4 format providing more than adequate coverage on the corners.

John Weaver was fast on the straights and hooked up in the corners enabling him to pull out to an 11-lap lead by the change-over to the inside lanes. Woody Hazelwood was in 2nd place with Richard Payne and Dave Panich two laps back, tied for 3rd at 205 laps each. 5th place Tom Smith trailed them by 8 while enjoying a 4-lap lead over Dan Savage who was one lap up on Dick Griffin. 3 laps back Rich Girvin was in 8th with 189 laps while Wayne Secore finished out the field.

Weaver opened up his lead after the move to the inside lanes to walk away with the win by a more-than-comfortable 26 lap margin. Richard P was closing in on Woody, adding 3 laps to his first half total while Woody wasn’t gaining any ground. When time ran out Richard came up one lap shy of 2nd place. Meanwhile, Dave was busy crashing and losing laps, relegating him to 4th place while Tom fell a little off the pace but still was able to claim 5th.

Rich G came on strong in the second half, adding 10 laps to his 1st half effort as he moved from 8th place up to 6th, passing both Dan and Dick as the three of them ended up separated by just one lap. This was some close racing when it is put into the perspective of time; about 7 seconds separated the 3 racers after 385+ laps of racing.

Weaver took fast-lap honors for the evening with a 3.124 on orange. Dave edged Woody by .001 of a second to post the 2nd fastest lap of the evening at 3.288 but both were well off John’s pace. Richard P had some horsepower for a change as he posted a best-lap time just .007 off Woody’s pace.
