This build is going to be a "combo-load" combining 3 different Pittman motors. Here are the victims:

Pittman%20323%205.jpg

Luckily I have loose parts for the 196 and 65 so only one complete motor had to be torn apart:

Pittman%20323%206.jpg

I was inspired by fellow Slotblogger with this post during another of my Pittman builds:

In the Chicago area, It was common practice in the mid 1960's to use the larger magnet DC- 60/62 series big blocks with the 65-6 volt arms and the 196 rear carriers..............

The 62 has a bigger magnet than the 196 but is the same width so it can be simply bolted in. But the side plates on the 62 are bigger and would wrap around the armature more.........maybe for more torque?  :unknw:

Here is the smaller 196 side plate on top of the 62 motor:

Pittman%20323%201.jpg

I need to make the 62 fit the 196 rear axle bracket and a 65-6V armature.

First step is to disassemble the 62 and cut off the rear bearing plate to free up the side plates:

Pittman%20323%2015.jpg

The 62 side plates need to be Dremeled and filed into shape to accept the 196 rear axle bracket.

Modified side plate on the bottom:

Pittman%20323%2014.jpg

A 2-56 hole has to be drilled very near the existing hole to mount the 196 rear axle bracket. I filled the existing hole with a brass screw soldered in place:

Pittman%20323%2013.jpg

The finished 62 side plates:

Pittman%20323%2018.jpg

Cutting the tenons into the 62 side plates to fit into the 196 rear axle bracket while keeping everything aligned was the hard part:

Pittman%20323%2012.jpg

Before installing that 196 rear axle bracket I made a small modification to it:

Pittman%20323%202.jpg

WHAT!  :shok: :wacko2: :o

Rick, when you get to that point, can you show us how you rezap the magnet in these open frame motors? In the day, I never owned any, but now I have a DC196B.

Intriguing combo of parts with the larger 62 motor.. FUN

Wonders as to what car is going to accept such a cool powerplant.. hmmm.

Sure Bill I'll show the zapping process I use soon. Here's a link to a zapping experiment on a 196:

Paul, this mod was necessary for the kind of car the motor's going in  :)

The ball bearing is a nice touch.  I usually just used the motor as the rear of chassis and the guide holder and ballast pan hung underneath.  My two Chapparells are still running (2A & 2F) in 1/32 scale.

Hi Larry,

Larry's reply to a thread of mine back in 2015 was the inspiration for this motor build......thanks! :victory:

I love to use ball bearings especially in these old "non-can" motors. Almost all the motor "hop-up" articles in the old magazine use them:

Pittman%20323%208.jpg

I've always used the motor as the back half of the chassis too Larry but this time I've got a different idea for a chassis and the motor is going to be attached with this modified 196AB rear end:

Pittman%20323%204.jpg

Here's my partially finished mashup motor compared to the classic Pittman 196/65X combination with a Crane rear end:

Instead of the motor being used as the back half of the chassis, I've decided I want to see how this motor would work in an early Team Russkit style chassis. The motor will be bolted to a good old Russkit motor bracket:

Pittman%20323%207.jpg

The build will be similar to what appeared in the first 1966 Rod & Custom road race series. Early in the series there were even a couple of hold out Tyco - Pittman powered cars. One even finished 5th in the 2nd race main.

Here is the first race of the series to show the kind of cars I want to pattern my build after:

morressey%20RampC%20sports%20car%20pg%20

morressey%20RampC%20sports%20car%20pg%20

morressey%20RampC%20sports%20car%20pg%20

morressey%20RampC%20sports%20car%20pg%20

morressey%20RampC%20sports%20car%20pg%20

This won't be a heavy brass rod, multi rail "jail door" chassis so often seen these days even with very early motors and bodies. Those evolved late in that series as Mabuchi rewound motor power increased and the extra weight helped cornering.

I'll be making a 2-rail brass tube frame along these lines:

post-3-0-45443800-1318885175.jpg

Below is a link to virtually all things 1966 Rod & Custom Series.......race reports, rules construction threads and coverage of the 2014 Proxy event including results and lap times:

Rod & Custom Road Races revisted

Time to start soldering :)

Should be FUN!

Remember that Tyco sidewinder R&C car you did and how well your drive report came back.. sweet car!

It's a shame they never let the open cages run with the wick "wet".

I love all slot cars and the 69s and 70s brass beasts with hot single & double winds are amazing there's just something about the Rod & Custom machines

Just need someone to build those gargantuan tracks from the '66 series.

Absolutely a beautiful 196B-65X combo, made me buy half dozed B's to play with, if I can only find my old 65 arm. Great job Rick!

Chassis time. :dance3:

My friend and mentor Rodney suggested I beef up the Russkit motor bracket to support the weight (twice that of a Mabuchi 16D) and torque of the Pittman DC323X............(Pittman 196 + 65 + 62 = 323)   :D

A 1/32" thick strip of K&S brass sheet was soldered to the inside of the Russkit bracket to double it's thickness:

Pittman%20323%2019.jpg

The unused Mabuchi mounting hole on the top was cut off and new holes drilled for the DC323X:

Pittman%20323%2020.jpg

She's ready to build the chassis around......

Pittman%20323%2021.jpg

......now where is my stick of "miracle axle tubing"?

What size hex head bolts have you used Rick to attach the 196x62x65 to the Russkit bracket, 2#56?

Very smooth execution Sir :D

I think this is 55 yrs old now with all original parts including braid and brushes.  I got to put Chapparell inserts in the wheels and a fresher body - or at least put the correct #67 on it as Roger Penske drove it at the Meadowdale USRRC race when I photographed it.

Lubed it up and ran laps on the Fiedler Flat Track just fine...still no brakes without the reverse voltage brake box.

Hi Mike and Larry,

Very cool car. I love the brass pan and guide pin. Thanks for sharing it. :)

The top of the magnet looks to be angled. Is it ground down sloping to the front?

Here's another interesting car using a Pittman196B and a 65-6V armature.  With aluminum frame, Crawford wheels, O-ring fronts and "German" rears, kind of standard fare for Orange County, CA at Raceways such as Tiny's, RE Owens, Daytona, Eastown and several American Hobby tracks in the mid 60's.

The very minute the Russkit 23 came out it obsoleted cars like this overnight!

The DC-6x series had different magnet shapes than just square...60, 61, 62, 63(?), & A,B,C.....

Just happened to be a trapezoid magnet in this one.

The front axle/guide assy is pivoted as well.  Set screw controls the pin depth in slot.

Built when I was still in high school.
