Will lacquer thinner mess with the anodized color?

Abrasives will, like steel wool or harsh Scotchbrite.

I'm not wanting to remove it, I want it to stay.

Isn't anodising an electrolytic process?

Lacquer thinners should have NO effect on it :)

Don't soak it.

Just when I thought it was OK to soak with Dave's advice, Phil says "no soak".

We shall see :)  I put a little puddle of thinner in a cup and placed one hub in it, inner race down

After a 1.5 hour soak, the red anodizing shows zero sign of dissolving

So it's time for a good soaking

To get the rubber off, you don't have to soak long. The adhesive should soften enough to rub the residual rubber off with your fingers.

You won't need to use steel wool. While with the Bensenville Bombers I did lots of these tires.

Thanks for the coaching, guys. I gave them the rough treatment for my experiment - overnight soak.

Not because I felt it necessary - because I was lazy.

Result: Thinner DID affect them, but very slightly, as it turned it slightly pink. But the anodizing held fast.  I'd say, use it but don't soak it, like Phil and Dave said.

For tires glued on with contact cement, try soaking in camper fuel. It works well and after 24 hours the tire and glue just roll right off. It will not attack magnesium so no worry about anodized hubs. A quick rinse in lacquer thinner to remove the very light oil film and you are ready to glue them up. If you forget them for a couple of days you will not hurt them. I have soaked magnesium hubs for 2 - 3 days with no problem.

Nice hubs.  I would mind making up some fronts with those.  First time I've seen them.  Part # or I.D.?
